He We Solicit Your Correspondence EXAMINE FOUR OF WRECK WITNESSES Inquest on D. I'. It. Accident Elicits Some Revelating and Damag-_ -ig Testimony. IISPATCIER HAS TOO MUCH WORK Four witnesses were examined at the inquest held in the county court house last night by Coroner W. G. Johnson to fix the blame for the wreck; which occurred on the D. U. R., April 15, in which twelve students were in- jured. Criminal proceedings may arisc from the finding of the coroner's jury, and the State Railway commission may take action. Frank Kane, of Ypsilanti, train dis- patcher on duty at the time of the ac- c dent, gave testimony regarding the orders he issued to cars 108 and 109. He declared that the cars were to meet at Finks', aand that some mistake must have been made by the crew of the east bound car. He further testified that he handled without an assistant sixteen passenger and nine other cars on that shift. Burton M. Hudnut, a motorman or. the car which left Jackson, stated that he repeated the orders taken by his conductor to the train dispatcher, and Kane replied that the repetition was correct. These orders were to the ei- feet that he was to meet train 108 at Bates, about nine miles east of Finks. Motorman Hudnut said he saw the west bound car about 2,500 feet away although he applied the brakes and re- versed the power, he .only succeeded in checking the speed before- the cars ::ame together. In his opinion, the motorman of the west bound car could not observe his approach because of the smoke in the air, and the intense glare of the sun. The cars were run- ning about thirty miles an hour when they struck and the west bound car telescoped the other one. The hearing will be continued in Judge Kinne's court room next Mon- day evening at 7 o'clock, and as there are about fifteen witnesses to appear, additional developments are expected. SPAULDING & MERRICK CHICAGO Some definite action relative to a change in the policy in the forestry schzol will probably be sanctioned by the Regents at their regular monthly meeting Thursday., It is generally be- lieved'that Prof. Filibert Roth was in- duced to remain at the head of thex department with the promise that cer- tain changes in its status would be made, and it is these that the Regerd are expected to consider. "I cannot say definitely why I fin- nally determined to refuse the Cornell offer," Prof. Roth stated when seen yesterday afternoon, "except, of course, that I am much attached to Michigan. It is likely, however, that the Regents will take some step with regard to the forestry school when they meet this week." A rumor that Prof. C. L. Hill, of the forestry department, who recently ten- dered his resignation, would also re- main at Michigan, now that Prof. Roth has decided to stay, was fpund to be without foundation. Prof. Hill has al- ready accepted a position in the West and will leave as soon as school clos- es.
