Harold Hippler. tbi5rgive the student body any more confidenice in the Council? Hardly. It will iot become much more than it is now, a mere committee of the faculty, a buffer and a wedge between the students and the Senate.: Against the plea that meetings should be open to the public, several of the Councilmen argued that this would be embarrassing, because some socialists or other radicals might come to the meeting and "fuss" the Council. If this be true then let us abolish the Council and allow the So- cialist club to take its place. Its mem- bers are at least strong enough to stand up for their views and argue for them, no matter who is on the other side. Let the Council, do likewise and the student body will rally behind it. In an editorial on Tuesday The Michigan Daily tried to show why Michigan does not have selfigovern- ment and how the Student Council has failed as representatives of the student body. Now we will show how the Council has lost the respect of the people whom it represents, and later will point out what we believe is a remedy for this situation. The Council lacks the confidence of ti s ulnt body. This has been due to several things. First, and prob- ably most important, isthe fact that the Council has resolved itself into a secret body which meets at certain times, acts as it desires, and makes public just as little or as much as it desires. What goes on within its cham- bers is all unknown to the student body, which elected these men 'as rep- resentatives. Time and again the stu- dents have been asked to contribute to the Council for one thing or another, and that was the last heard of it. The students gave their money and then had to forget about it, until the Coun- cil chose to inform them. After this was continued for sev- eral years, the students and the class- es are naturally somewhat skeptical abcut the Council and support it in on- ly half-hearted fashion, and, in a great number of instances, not at all. It is this condition that the Council is de- crying at present, but is making no at- tempt to remedy by removing the caus- es. for your Fresh and Salt Meats, Pork, Ham Poultry Sausage ETC. Huron P Four Days Five Concerts THE CHORAL UNION UNDER STANLEY 11, Another equally fundamental cause for the isolation of the Council is the. one mentioned in the previous edito- rial. Instead of acting as representa- tives of the students who have the in- herent right to say how they shall con- duct themselves as long as they remain within the limits of the laws of the state of Michigan, the Councilmen have done exactly the opposite. Instead of exercising power which was rightful- ly their own, they have sought power for themselves from the faculty. From the faculty they have received little. Instead they should have endeavored to exercise the student powers of self- government. Is it to be wondered at that the stu- dent body has lost faith in the Coun- cil? Instead of remedying this and seeking to restore the Council to its re- al position, the organization is begging the Senate to grant to it a new con- stitution with increased power.
