mm In a SAYS STUDENT BODY SHOULD CONTROL SELF. (Continued from Page i. ) ing money for the band, the underclass contests and such events of common interest, has been by popular subscrip- tion, it is not surprising, certainly not dishonoring, that its finances were al- ways uncertain. It was never known until the eleventh hour whether the band could be sent East. It then often' happened that unexpected contribu- tions came in suddenly at the last minute in excess of the amount need- ed. Such sums could not be returned because their donors were not known. The only reasonale solution was to turn the money over to the general -treasury of the Council, to mxeet such expenses as resulted from, for in- stance, football celebrations, or if pos- sible to preserve the amount intact to start a similar fund the following year. And yet the Student Council has been '^ioiently attacked by The Michigan Daily as well as ridiculed in nursery- rhyme fashion for just such action! Students Should Cooperate. An efficient and influential Student Council every democratic university should have. Two things, at present, prevent the developMent of such an or- ganization here at Mlc~g~an. First, the faculty jealousy guards itg p~er~og- atives, and rsecondly, the students taill to appreciate ie peed of serious and enthusiastic cooperaigi. AWe should at least be able to remedy the latter. It is said that highly favored indeed is that university whose alumni ha -,e thIF alma mater jalways in memoriy, and who delight to do fiey honor; but more richly bleed surely is too ni- versity whose studomts, while t~e are students and before th~ey have left the college halls, conceive a rigid per- spective of what 'makeo for her iip- building and her highest good. 'hen [the students have reached this concept and are ready to act in accordance therewith, who shall deny them the right of self government? An Earnest Citizen.
