There is a larger per centage of-stu- dents .here,. who work, .their way throujgh college, than at any of the large eastern colleges. If Princeton felt the need of such a fund how much more would it be worth to Michigan. In a recent issue, The Michigan Dai- ly suggested that the senior classes combine, and ,instead of giving a num- ber of ornate but valueless miemorials, establish a scholarship fund. This fund could be known by the name of "The ,Found of the Class of 1912" anq could be used to defray tue expenses of a number of students who are unable to pay their own way throughi college. To make this a real and effective fund, the graduating classes for the next ten years ought to unite and give their memorial funds to su~ch a schiol- arship en~dowment. Estimating tile matter conservatively the classes should easily raise a thousand dollars each year. In ten years this would for this money. It is not the plan 'of thiosb favorable. to this idea that this money. should he given outright to ,deserving students, but rather as a loan. The same rules could be followed as are used by oth- er trustees of such funds. A certain amount is loaned to a student, inter- est free, each year,.diuring his college course. Upon graduiation, he is allow- ed one year in which to repay the'ieoan withoutinterest. 'The safet3 _of. the loan is secured by the h'olding of :an insur- ance policy as collateral and promnis- sory rotas 'erdased4 byY 'parents 'or guardian~s. - By pursuing such a method, the fund not only remains intact but is. constant- ly growing. 'Risk' fromls=ids s m'all and there i. lJtte trouble' thaingcare of the money, The idea of 'a memorial 'is t'o keep the name of the class before the uni- versity during the years following graduation. How to best accomplish such a thing has been' the idea of all previous classes. Some have proved greater 'failures than others, judging by the mem~orial mausoleum in the basement of University hall: By establishing memorial' scholar- ship funds, the graduating classes will be constantly in the minds of the facul- ties, the students, and especially to the deser~ving few, who are enabled to se- cure an education through the gener- osity of these classes, will they ever be examples of great work that classes may accomplish. PROFS. PILLSBURY ANIDGUYTHE TO ADDRESS AD CLUB, DlETROIT. Professor K. E. Guthe will go to De- troit on Thursday of this week to speak before the~ Ad Club on. the Uni- versity Extension Course. The topic of his talk will be 'Color and Color Photography." Professor W. B. Pillsbury will speak before the same organization later in the week on "The Psychology of Ad- vertising." Engagements Mean Little at Iowa. The Daily Iowan has recently made public some statistics which they have compiled in regard to engagements among students. Only one such engagement out of every elev- en, says the paper, ever results in mar- 'riage. Of course these statistics apply only to the University of Iowa. Dean Vaughan Lectures at Kazoo. Dr. V. C. Vaughan, dean of the med- ical department, goes to Kalamazoo to- day where he will deliver two lectures. He will talk to the Kalamazoo Acade- my of Medicine on "Fever; Its -Nature and Significance," and to the general public on "The Evolution of theSu S-perman."
