VV A T CH Vocal Historical Recital. For pure beauty of musial expres- sion no songs in the entire library of vocal literature excell, and few rival the lieder of Schubert and Schumann. Nowhere else. in the smaller forms of composition is the union of poetry and music so complete as in the songs of these masters of vocal writing. While both these men wrote separate songs that are immortal, yet it is in their song cycles that their inspirations found fullest expression. For the program yesterday after- noon, sixteen of the most interesting songs from the best known cycles of Schubert and Schumann were selected. To the interpretation of them, Mr. Howland brought all the refinements of the art of singing of which he is master. Specifically, we wish to note the varying qualities and colors of tone employed and the sinking of the sing- er's personality into the intensification of the poetry and melody. The aver- age artist'pays little attention to such seemingly minor points in lieder sing- ing; and it was just these details that made for the greater enjoyment of the program by the audience. Songs of "Louisiana Lou." No other musical comedy produced in recent years has contained so many proved musical hits as "Louisiana Lou," which will be given here on Sat- urday, March 9, matinee and night, in the New Whitney theater, by Harry Askin's special company. 319,000 cop- ies of the various songs have been sold It is a surprising fact that more than 20,000 copies of this number were sold in England. More than 100,000 were of the great ballad in Act II, "My RoseE of the Ghetto;" while 62,000 were of the serenade and dance in Act II, "Louisiana Lou, My Lou." Apart from the copies of songs, the orchestra arrangements have beent sold in immense quantities; so have1 the dance-arrangements more thanl 50,000 of which were sold in December,. The publishers say that they are al-.. ready in receipt of orders from Europe and this country for brass-band ar- rangements. Engineers to Dabble in Debate "Resolved that the United States government should take over the tel- ephone lines and operate them in con- junction with the postal system" will be the subject for debate at the next meeting of the engineering society de- bating section. These meetings are held each Tuesday night, and every engineer is invited to attend and par- ticipate in the discussions. Dr. de Nancrede Improves Steadily.
