TCH Number Greate; Than Last February Though "Cons" and "Plucks" Are Fewer. MARKING SYSTEM PLAN AMENDED Thirty-two students were last niglt sent notices of dismissal from the lit- erary department on account of fail- ures. At a faculty meeting held yes- terday afternoon the findings of the committee,, in the cases of those who were in danger, were considered and action was taken as to their continued residence in the university. The numbers of the "busted" are a little larger this year than they were last, but this is due to an increased strictness in the standard of scholar- ship which it is the policy of the fac- ulty to foster. The actual number of "cons" and "plucks," though no data are tabulated, is considered to be less this year than in some.time past. An amendment was made, at the meeting, to the resolution in regard to the new grading system. In the case. of absence from examinations, instead of waiting till a time corresponding to that set for the present "con" ex- arms, the student will be required to take the supplementary test within one month after the beginning of the new semester. This is the same ru: which is to prevail in regard to cours- es marked "incomplete."3 In 'regard to the new system, one1 feature which has not been brought out very strongly is the fact that data concerning the marks given by every instructor are to be published for the benefit of the faculty. In this way inl structors prone to be too liberal,1 or otherwise, are expected to be brought under the pressure of popu- lar opinion and influenced to conform their standards to the normal. GAME TOURNAMENTS BOOMING. Organizational Contests, in Bowling, Billiards and Pool, Close.: Along with the other activities that mark the new semester, interest is booming in the various billiard, pool and bowling leagues in the State' street billiard' parlors. As the scores stand at the present, the sophomore, lits lead in class billiards, with a thir- ty-three point lead over the senior lits, and in pool the senior engineers are first, with the freshmen engineers1 holding second place.- In the Palladium league, Phi Kappa Psi stands at the head of the list in] billiards with Psi Upsilon enjoying second place, while in pool Psi Upsi- lon has a twenty point lead over the' nearest competitors, Beta Theata Pit and Chi Psi, who are tied for second, WATER HO! DISCOVERED AT TWO HUNDRED FOOT DEPTH Local Aqua Pura May Contain irac- ulous Medicinal Properties That Will Win Fame. With many laborious chuggings, a wheezy old donkey engine, tethered in the yard of a good doctor on Hill street, has been sneezing and other- wise endeavoring to clear out its bron- chial tubes for some months past. The braying of the creature daily impinges on the refined atmosphere which per- yades this part of the community. Fed with generous rations of soft coal, the brute has persistently driven the iron antennae of a six-inch drill deep into the glacial drift upon which this fair city is built. Working on the theory that a new route to China was on the point of be- ing discovered a representative of the "Michigan Daily" was assigned to "probe" the doctor. An entirely new theory was revealed, however, when the doctor confided, "At last we have struck-" "Oil?" gasped our repre- sentative with bated breath, visions of Beaumont and Bakersfield crowding into his mind. "Water?" you say. "Yes, we have found an inexhausti- ble supply at a depth of over two hun- dred feet, lying beneath a thin filter of gravel," replied the doctor "but it re- mains to be tested as to its purity." whether it possesses-a peculiar aro- ma or miraculous medicinal properties will be known in due time. Meanwhile we may look for the appearance of a sparkling new table water under the trade name of "Rameses" dr "Michi- genda" or something which will carry the fame of our institutions from Sher- ry's to Rector's and beyond. It is only after three costly attempts that the doctor has succeeded in obtaining the supply of .qua pura which he sought and he is now planning a "water par- ty" as an appropriate function to cele- brate the opening of the well. AUDIENCE WAITED TWO HURS FOR GOVERNOR ON LAST VISIT Though Greatly Delayed by Bad Roads Gov. Osborn Was Greeted by Big Crowd. History repeats itself, sometimes., The managers of the Washington's Birthday exercises, and the other ac- tivities in which Governor Osborn will participate, hope, however, that to- day's audience will not have the op- portunity of displaying the loyalty to the executive that was displayed on the occasion of his last address in University Hall. That was in the sum- mer time and the. Governor essayed to reach Ann Arbor by automobile. Rough roads and weak tires prevented the arrival of the speaker until nearly two hours after the time set for the address to begin. But few people leftl the hail and they announced that they would be back at nine o'clock, and they were. When they came back they biought more with them and when the Governor arrived at 9:30 a record crowd was awaiting him. Snow drifts may not prove' so seri- ous a handicap as tires. l CECIL LEAN and FLO In t New SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24 MATINEE Whitney By the Authors of "Three Twins" and "Madar Augmented Orchestra 1 Best Seats $1.00 it 1 JOS.
