Cribbing. rrr -. ,._ lie or Rent WRITING + , , - -i i . q ==- _-- the theory that to repose a trust pro- duces generally a desire to respect the trust,, the so-called honor system has been introduced in anumber of Ameri- can universities. Its chief objection is that It is ethically extravagant. It is a serious thing to drag out of is nat- ural soil in the subconscious the del- icate sentiment of honor and at the end of each examination make each student declare that he has neither given nor received aid. The evil of cheating in examinations can never reach very serious propor- tions in a well conducted institution. Student sentiment in no college will tolerate "cribbing" to win scholastic honors. Such cheating as student sentiment condones is confined mainly to cases where dull or lazy students attempt to escape being dropped. The evil can be cured by simple means. A good instructor gets papers of such a nature that illegitimate aids are of little avail. Grasp of a sub- ject, the relation of part to part, judg- ment on critical questions, application of principles to facts,-these are the essentials of a college course and can be extemporized no more with than without outside aid. Vital teaching, fraik and friendly personal relations, and firm administration when requir- ed can secure results quite as satis- factory as those claimed, for the doubt- ful honor system. VERIFICATION CLUB PLANS PROGRAM FOR NEW SEMESTER Members of the Verification club, the new faculty organization of the Home- opathic department, have arranged a program for meetings during the pres- ent semester as follows: - Feb. 27.-"Accessories to Homeo- pathic Prescribing," Dr. R. R. Melon. March 12.1"Impressionistic Pre- scribing," Dr. W,' B. Hinsdale. March 26.-"Do Remedies Influence the Growth of Tumors?" Dr. D. T. Smith. April 23.-"Eye Symptoms of Kid- ney Diseases and Remedies Indicated," Dr. Dean W. Myers. May 7.-"Hemorrhagic Remedies in Gynecology," Dr. C. B. Kinyon. At each meeting, after the paper is read, the members of the club will hold an informal discussion The object of this association is to discuss the va- rious elements of materia medica, and especially the verification of remedies as used clinically. LIT SYSTEM OF MARKING TO BE GRADED IN PERCENTS. When the literary faculty adopted the "special order" of the administra- tive board Wednesday night, providing for the new marking system, a special subsidiar~y stipulation was added to the resolution to the following effect: In a rational system of marking, the grades are distributed about as fol- lows: A, not more than 10 per cent.; B, 15 to 20 per cent; C, 40 to 50 per cent; D, 15 to 20 per cent; E, about 10 per cent. it is not expected that such will be the proportions in any one class, nor even the record of any one semester; but in the long run the marks are ex- pected to work out as above. For all branches of ethics, there is perhaps none so perplexing as that of honesty. To win an honorable mark in an examination by dishonest meth- ods is obviously an offence aganist honest competitors, altogether apart from the self-degredation involved and yet many a student,-it might almost be said, the average conscientious stu- dent, views "cribbing" in a far differ- ent light from common cheating. He reasons that by the precautions they take against surreptitious aids in ex- aminations, the faculty are assuming the responsibility for his fitness for promotion. To secure practical honesty in ex- aminations is a problem which has never been perfectly solved. Vigi- lance, no matter how strict, is never entirely effectual. It seems that so soon as a professor begins a system of espionage, the student feels at liberty to outwit him if possible. Based on Philip Morri.
