Although we are moved to rejoiceo editorially over the passage of the "blanket tax for athletics," smile at the tribulations of the "Big Eight," an- ticipate joys of an auditorium that now seems assured, congratulate our- selves on the impending joys of the Diamond Jubilee, mourn the loss of a disappearing faculty, and occupy our- self with other congenial tasks, we _ cannot escape the shadow of the ap- proaching examinations. Like other campus citizens the members of the Daily staff must take examinations and we find it necessary to sing our swan song for the semester as our final act before ceasing our editorial labors to face the ordeals to conpe. Let us wish each other good luck, all possible cheerfulness, and success. RUMOR THAT DEAN COOLEY IS TO TRY POLITICS, UNFOUNDED. "J" HOP TO BE FEATURED IN - -MINTG ISSUE OF GARfGOYLE. "Surveying the whole .field of the law's relationship to woman, though it may have some inequalities, yet on the other hand it has gone far in fa- voring her, far beyond what it has done for man," said Prof. E. C. God- dard of the law department in an ad- dress before the Detroit Federation of Women's Clubs Friday afternoon. In support of his point, Prof. Goddard cited the English divorce laws as an example. Touching on the question of equal suffrage, he said; "Voting is not a privilege, but a duty under the law, so the law has not deprived you of a privilege but spared you the re- sponsibility of a duty." Illness Keeps Dr. Van Hoosen Away. Illness was the reason given yester- day for the failure of Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen to appear before the Women's League Friday afternoon. MUSIC AND DRAMA "The Girl of My Dreams." Jos. M. Gaites' most pretentious of- fering of good things comical and mu- sical, John Hyams and Leila McIntyre in the delightful play "The Girl of My Dreams,"' will be the attraction at the New Whitney Theater Friday and Sat- urday, February 2 and 3, with a mat- inee Saturday. John Hyams, one of the stars, is exceptionally clever. It is impossible not to laugh at and with him. Leila- McIntyre, as the demure little Quakeress, has made a Idecided hit, dancing and singing her way into favor. In addition to the bright up-to-date and breezy fun supplied by the au- thors, Wilbur D. Nesbit and Otto Hau- erbach, there are many distinct novel, ties of stage-craft. Karl Hoschna's music is all catchy, and the number, For Your Michiganensian Why not have Something Exclusive and Cl Examinations--a '"Cinch .Eust go to WAHR'S and purchase a dozen or so of thei BBLUE BOOKS -They keep all sizes and kinds-cords of them-a "forward-pa "smile -- smile" in every one of the m. I have neither time nor money to devote' to a cam- paign." It had been reported that friends among the graduates of the university were urging Dean Cooley to work for the nomination. He was much sur- piised to be thought of in that con- nection. NEW SYSTEM OF SPELLING ADVANCED BY OLD ALUMNUS. Professor Scott, of the Rhetoric de- partment, has received a pamphlet from a former Michigan student, which sets forth the elements of a system to take the place of the present alpha- bet. Everett W. Fish of Glenn Everett, N. Y., and a student here some time in the sixties; is the originator of the new idea. He proposes a system call- ed the "syllabet," which does away with *letters, and which he claims "is so simple that a child of eight years can learn to read all human language in' from ten to twenty hours." It is only one of many similar ideas which are set forth. before Professor Scott dur- ing a year but which are of no practi-, cal value because their authors are, strangely lacking in a knowledge of phonetics. 340 So.
