McGee Student Council of the University of Michigan assembles in secret conclave. The Council, unfortunately enough, seems to wield little influence and less authority. No one can be expected to take a very lively interest in the de- liberations of a body which smothers its discussions behind closed doors. If the Student Council is doing any- Th thing that is worth while, it would add "sm vastly to its prestige and influence if it would allow the university public E to attend to deliberations. If it is not do'ng anything, it might interest the student body to learn of the fact. for There are times when secrecy may be necessary in the consideration of certain confidential communications. Secret sessions are ordered by all de: ' liberative bodies to meet such situa- tions. An occasional emergency is no reason for a general rule of invariable application. The action which the Student Coun-1 oil took on the petition for a refer- endure, and the manner of consider- ation, again brings forth a method of procedure used by our university de- .iberative body which we believe to be open to serious criticism. The Coun- cil may have been justified in tabling the resolution. The Council may have acted in opposition to the wishes and beliefs of the student body in so doing. No one can tell because none but Coun- cilmen attended the deliberations. The reasons and considerations which lay behind the decision should be made clear. Those who are interested should >e allowed to attend the discussion. The United States Senate, and other# bodies considering matters of rela- ively slight importance, meet in pub- lic so that the democracy they rep- -esent may know what they are doing how they are doing it, and why.
