The most notable play on the stage today is Edmund Rostand's poetic fan- tasy of the barnyard, "Chantecler," which Charles Frohman is to present at the New Whitney Theatre Tuesday, October 17, with Maude Adams in the title role. In France, Rostand is idol- ized and his genius is .recognized throughout the world. The presenta- tion of the drama on which its author labored for seven years, brings in combination with Rostand the most ambitious and best loved of American actresses and it is to be said to her infinite credit that in it she has scored one of the biggest successes of her career. "Chantecler" is today the greatest novelty that the stage of this or any other country has to offer. It is at once a great spectacle, a serious poem and a fantastic comedy all in one. "The Top 0' Th' World." With a world of sparkling melodies and overflowing with real novelties, "The Top 0' Th' World," with ts-orig- inal stars, Bailey and Austin, and the entire original company, will be the attraction at the New Whitney Thea- tre, Monday, October 16. Alan Dale, the celebrated dramatic critic on the New York American, is probably the 'coldest-blooded' reviewer in the coun- try. His pen seems to be steeped in pure sarcasm. Of Bailey and Austin In "The Top 0' Th' World"- he said: "To be perfectly candid I expected for the most part to be bored. I acknowl- edge freely that I was not. It is really a wonderful show-and I say wonder- ful advisedly. It has so many novel- ties. The scenic effects are astonish- ingly good. Bailey and Austin, seen as two strange mechanical toys, a "Jack-in-the-Box" and a "Candy Kid" did almost everything in the repor- toire of amusement. They danced- many times and excellently-they jug- gled; they played musical instruments -they fell down-and fell down ex- cellently-they were almost always evident, and I laughed heartily." With Bailey and Austin, the entire original company, and an ensemble of seventy people, "The Top 0' Th' World" will be one of the noteworthy musical attractions of the season. So successful was the experiment tried out last year in the faculty con- certs, viz., the bringing of out of town artists to add variety to the programs, that the University School of Music has decided to make it a permanent feature of the series. It is not possi- ble at this early date, however, to make any definite announcements as to who will be engaged. For the first concert, which is to be given Thursday evening in High School hall, an especially interesting program is being prepared. It will also mark the local debut of Fraulein Leonie Born, who was called from the Leipsic Conservatory to the posi- tion of first assistant in the vocal de- partment of the School of Music, Lost-Duplex slide rule between En- gineering Building and 635 S.
