:r AIL.5 i J. will (Continued from page 1.) its-sudden arrival on the campus, been engaged in two enterprises: absorbing competition and rendering its contin- ued presence essenitial. The first of these is seen in the practical assimi- lation of the Students' Christian Asso- ciation, which is nominally. retained only to enable the John R. Mott cor- poration to make use of its property, Newberry Hall. The second has been partially effected by rendering many real services such as the publication of the Student Handbook and the main- taining of an employment bureau. Both of these should, and normally would have been performed elsewhere. Now, however, the time has come when the' Y. M. C. A. and the Michigan Union can no longer be contiguously present. Either all possibility for a new and magnificent home for the Unioni is to disappear, or the religious institution must be withheld from building its projected clubhouse and from the gen- eral interference with the younger members of the student body, men in no way in sympathy with its religious motives, but whom its widely distrib- uted and, in one case, misrepresenta- tive pamphlets attract. Even now the leaders are, it is said, endeavoring to - obtain money from willing alumni for their club house on the ground that the defunct condition of the Union renders aiding the student body through it im- possible. And if the purposed club- house be constructed, the Union IS dead. The situation is immanent and de- serves attention. The students must judge between the contending factors, the Michigan Union .and the alien Y. M. C. A. This letter is but a plea that the vital nature and present insistence of the situation be not overlooked. Are we to unite to rule - our social rela- tions or not? Is college spirit worth while, or is the Yellow and the Blue a mere travesty of a former sentiment? Do we believe in both? Once let it be plainly shown that the campus atti- tude is against the Y. M. C. A., and . the withdrawal of the latter is assured. It only exists now through our iner- tia. The S. C. A. and the churches are well capable of caring for Christianity among the students. The Y. M. C. A. must go. EDGAR A. MOWRER, '13 Lit. J! >< *: CLASSIFIED ADS.
