Vocal Ilstorlhal Recital. "Two Song Cycles" was the caption chosen for W"illiam. Howland's second historical recital given yesterday af-. ternoon. Specifically, he chose to pre- sent "An die ferne Geliebte" (IBeethov- en) and six of the fifteen romances from 'The Fair Magalone" (Brahms). A program of this nature has a dual purpose. Besides bringing forward songs which will be interesting vocally. it must exhibit the historical develop- ment of the cycle form. Such was the case yesterday, for the Beethoven cycle represents the beginnings of the form; and the Brahms, its later evolution. As neither of these masters knew howv to write for the voice, both of thle cy- cles stand on an equal footing as re- gards vocal appeal. Mr. Howland was in exceptionally good voice and he lent all his versatil- ity of expression to the interpretation of the songs. His singing, as always was marked by a happy balance of del- icacy and dignity. The classic beauty a the Beethoven numbers he made pat- ent, even though the accompaninent was, at times, too prominent. The sto-f ry of the young knight who leave: home and country in search of love and 'fame was vividly set forth in the "Fair Magalone." Earl Aloore played the accompani- +ments. iLneAJir ~igl)be boxing match and 'athletic stunts. This act must not be confused with that of a similar nature which appeared at the Majestic last year for it is entirely different and a new company in every respect. Evelyn Clark, a soprano with a reputation on the operatic stage, iron Dell, a talented msician, and "Snoozer," the dog with aeeducation will also appear. i ~ ~ ~ ~ -- - - --- - UNIVERSITY NOTICES Senior engineers hold first class dine den tonight at Union at 5:30.
