Any effort to express our sympathy for "Bottles" Thomson, bereaved by death of his brother, is woefully 'feeble. We realize that however staggering is our oven loss of him as. a Varsity star, Saturday, his loss is overwhelming in comparison. To us it means :possible defeat in a football game, a mere mat- ter of glory; to him, the taking away for all time of a loved one. Our ap- preciation of his sorrow may be slight, but our sympathy is none- the less sin- cere. The tragedy is a terrible blow tc Michigan. The team is badly crippled; ,he men are fighting on nerve alone bout we depended on the never-failing Thomson to save the day. The bril- liant fullback cannot play. We have' left only that traditional spirit of des- perate determination which has so of- ten, in years past, saved Michigan fron- impending defeat. Can it overcome the attacks of theo Red and Blue? We believe it can. VARklS1ITY 4 1'tiS H3A~ktI)litoLW ON EYE OF BIG~ BATTLE. II . r ' ' z .H EkSTU DENT-$' BOOKSTORE We are the original makers of English cI4thcs. Ap- parently the choice is betwee'n twc men, Carpell and Torbet, with the odds favoring the first named. Carpell has never played right end in a game but he has been drilled at that position all week in case Pontius should not be in. Torbet has already shown some a.bility there and it may be that he will lineup withi the team at the kickoff. The other positions are practically fixed as an- nounced yesterday.
