The Detroit Journal in an editorial yesterday lauds the work of Prof. Martin Luther D'Ooge, who re- cently made known his contemplated resignation from the university facul- "To several generations of college students he has represented not mere- ly a teacher of classics but the repre- sentative and champion of classicism," says the article. "All that the culture of Latin and Greek meant to the world's enlightenment he felt keenly and emphasized ably-but that is not all." No man has shown more interest in the modern excavations and explor- ations of the classic lands, the modern methods of study and research, the 'present-day study of texts. It is for this reason that Prof. D'Ooge was so formidable an advocate of the reten- tion of Greek and Latin. A mere hard- and-fast mandarin of the old methods of education, a mere traditionalist, would be swept aside like a grammar by Chauncey Goodrich. Prof. D'Ooge made his dead language minister to a living culture. The nan who was the teacher of hundreds of Greek teachers thus descended in a living line from the first Italians who rediscovered and restored the lost Greek lore, and par- took even in our own day of their grand enthsiasm. Today modern life has classics of its own that clamor for brain and time, but our greatest hope would be that such study of the clas- sics as shall continue may continue in the spirit of usefulness and purpose- fulness which marked the service of Prof. D'Ooge. sweaters cut over at the Palais Royal, 209 E.
