Martin Luther D'Ooge. man, is more majestic than the same, tree, crumbling and rotting, from which all vestige of life and useful- ness has departed, become a menace to the safety of the occasional pass- erby. How much finer and nobler it is to retire when in one's prime, at the sum- mit of the ladder, surrounded by hosts of friends, both on the faculty and among the students. How much more pleasing to receive the plaudits of the multitude as the curtain descends than to linger too long. How fine to leave when the sun is at its height than to wait until, with dotage and useless- ness, it sets in a not too rosy west. We Must Beat Cornell. Michigan must down the Ithacans. The student body must do its share in inspiring the team to victory. We can- not all be present at Ithaca but we can send the band. For this reason, if forno other, the bandsmen should be sent east. We want them to go to give the team active backing. Then too, on Michigan's initial appearance on the Cornell gridiron, her showing should be impressive, with the Wolver- ine spirit in evidence. To those who cannot go to Ithaca we say, help send the band. Subscriptions will be taken in all classes, today. Give liberally. The Athletic Association has done its share, "ut five hundred dollars must still be raised. At least it is now too late to argue that the association should shoulder the entire expense. If the band is to go the money must be raised today and tomorrow. There is no time to quibble. At mass meetings, at the games, and at the band concerts in the spring the bandsmen have shown their loyal- ty. They deserve the trip. The team and the band are an un- beatable combination. "Prexy" Angell headed the list three years ago.1 'hen came Professor Henry Carhart. Since then many have followed. Last year the university lost two of its not-j ed men, Professor Bradley M. Thomp- son and Professor Richard Hudson. Latest of all is the announcement that1 Professor Martin Luther D'Ooge con- templates retirement at the close of the present college year. Professor; D'Ooge's long and honorable career, as a member of the university faculty, is well known. It needs little com- ment. He has seen forty-two classes 'eave the university and has watched them as they have struggled against the realism and cynicism of the world. We regret to see him go, to leave the university with which he has so long been connected. Still we cannot but think that his action means more. Professor D'Ooge, still able and active, has many years1 of life before him. The regal oak, fell- Several additional nominations have been rreceived for membership in the N. 0. C. P. No graduate of Vassar college has ever been involved in divorce proceed- ings, says President James Monroe Taylor. When's the next train for for Poughkeepsie? Why need a dammed Huron river for crew racing? Just use that stretch of antiquated side-walk between the Daily office and William street.
