Bargaills in Sweaters Sweater Vests with Roll Collars to train leaders at the bar, men who are to attain eminence in public life, its standards must be above the or- dinary, and that the students must be held strictly to the mark. The stu- dents who participate in student activ- ities expect to meet the scholarship requirements. They are here primar- ily for study. There are real benefits which come ror the training which participation in many of the campus activities give. These benefits the men interested therein secure in addition to the train- ing given in the professional depart- ment. That there are such advantag- es Dean Bates is well aware. He him- self actively participates in such ac- tivities. There is no more ardent sup- porter of the Michigan Union and few who give more freely of their time and energy in its behalf than the law dean. While in the university he spent three years in campus journalism. While a student, during his alumni (lays in Chicago, and since joining the uni- versity faculty, he has been actively interested in the conduct of Varsity athletics. It is most galling that a man who is at once a teacher of un- usual strength and a man keenly in- terested in student activities, should be pictured to the student body as an enemy of student activities. It is with deep regret that we have unwittingly become the vehicle for the portrayal of the dean of the law de- partment as an enemy of campus ac- tivities, a position he certainly does not occupy. In reporting his address before the junior law class we quoted him as saying, "No sympathy should be shown those students that partici- pate in collegiate activities." We are convinced that the grammar is that of the "cub" who wrote the story, not of the dean to whom it was attributed. The sentiment expressed is equally without foundation. What the dean really said was that the standard of the department could not be lowered out of consideration for the men engaged in student activ- ities and they, like all others, must be held up to the high mark set. Thes purpose of Dean Bates to raise the standards and ideals of the law depart- ment is most commendable and should meet with the hearty cooperation of every serious, thinking student. It is indeed true that if the department is Platinum Portraits Pla,.tit~ni Por~ra.#!s 319 E. The students of Adrian college, where the Freshmen were defeated, Saturday, October 28, have written to Director Bartelme, expressing their regret of the accident to Kellar, the all-Fresh quarter, who suffered a bro- ken leg as a result of that game. They inclosed in the letter a money order and asked the authorities here to pur- chase flowers for the injured player and to convey him their regrets. .LEAVE A WANT AD FOR THAT LOST OR FOUND ARTICLE AT THE DAILY OFFICE OR AT QUARRY'S.
