81 Monday, May 5, 2008 The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com PRIMARY From Page 1 Despite the candidates' pleas, though, some are convinced the end-of-the-year stress will keep some students from the polls tomorrow. Recognizing that college stu- dents largely flock to Obama's message of hope and change, Nathan Ashworth, chapter coor- dinator of Ball State University's Students for Obama, said he is "a little bit concerned" that some students will be busy with finals and moving out. Ashworth, who had just com- pleted an exam before being interviewed, said numerous students asked him for advice when they realized Ball State's residence halls would be clos- ing May 3, leaving them with no place to stay if they wanted to vote in tomorrow's election. The Indianapolis native said his group planned ahead, and has been encouraging students to vote early since the voter regis- tration deadline passed April 7. Amanda Morris, president of Purdue University's chapter of Students for Hillary, said she expects her campus to be some- what disengaged from politics until the exam period ends. Despite the fact that Madeline Albright, the first-ever woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State and one of Clinton's most important supporters, was due to visit campus last Thursday, Morris anticipated that few stu- dents would show for the event. "I don't think many students willgoto that," said Morris, who had just finished a Spanish liter- ature final and had a psychology exam later that evening. "I just think right now we're at a criti- cal point in time where students are more focused on their finals than they are on the race." Even when Clinton spoke near the Purdue campus in downtown West Lafayette Wednesday afternoon, the New York senator drew a visibly older crowd of about 1,000 people to the event. Few students were in attendance for Clinton's stump speech on how to help America's struggling economy. Some said the final exam peri- ods would also limit how much students could campaign for the candidates. Purdue University sopho- more Kathryn Morrical agreed to campaign for Clinton by mak- ing phone calls to registered Democrats in the area. She made the commitment under one con- dition, though - that she could work her phonebanking shift after her last exam. "You want to help out, and you know that should, but then again, you know that finals are most important and that they should be your first priority," she said. RIAA From Page 1 Bernard said that while take down notices are common, untilAprilthe Uni- versity hadn't received a single preser- vation notice from the RIAA this year. Overall it saw a decline in the number of notices in 2007, too, he said. "For some reason that we don't know, the RIAA has escalated its efforts to issue take down notices and issue sub- poenas in the last week or two," he said. Bernard said that sending large num- bers of notifications at the same time places a bigger burden on universities. . While the University has been taxed by the sudden increase in notifications, the number it has received is dwarfed by the number sent to other campuses. Michigan State University received more than 1,000 notices over the past two weeks - the same number of notic- es the school received over the entire 2005-2006 school year, said Randy Hall, who handles infringement com- plaints at MSU. Steven L. Worona, director of policy and networking programs at EDU- CAUSE, a nonprofit group focused on technology use in higher education, said that during the past two weeks uni- versities nationwide were sent as many as 50 times the number of notices they usually receive over the same period. But Worona warned against using the number of copyright infringement notices sent to universities as an indica- tor of the amount of illegal file-sharing happening on college campuses. "We have no reason to believe and every reason to doubt that there's been an increase in infringing activity," he said."All we know is that they have clear- ly made a major change in the way they are determining what infringements are taking place and what infringements they choose to send notices about." RIAA spokeswoman Cara Duck- worth said in an e-mail interview with The Chronicle of Higher Education on Tuesday that the group has not changed its procedures for identifying copyright infringement. RIAA officials declined to comment further. 4 I 1 1 E t E i .._. the micigan c WilsonWhite Jaily GREAT HOUSES AVAILABLE!!!
