Tuesday, April 29, 2008 The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com 11 DRAFT From Page 10 following Tom Harmon in 1941. Other Wolverines selected in this year's draft include quarterback Chad Henne (2nd round, Miami), wide receivers Mario Manningham (3rd round, New York Giants) and Adrian Arrington (7th round, New, Orleans), outside linebacker Shawn Crable (3rd round, New England) and running back Mike Hart (6th round, Indianapolis). For Long's mother, Denise, the moment represented the culmina- tion of years of anticipation. Long's SOFTBALL From Page 10 With two strikes, the Wol- verines' all-time home run and RBI leader hita line drive to left field. The crowd rose to its feet as sophomore Kristin Larsen scored and sophomore Molly Bausher sprinted home from second base to make a diving slide as her left hand touched the plate to give Michigan the 3- 2 victory. "I saw Sam roped the ball to left field and there was no stop- ping me - I was going home all the way," Bausher said. "I had a great path towards home and her throw wasn't great, but even if it was, I think I still would have been safe." Northwestern stifled the usu- ally potent Wolverine offense for much of the afternoon. After claiming two five-inning mercy- rule wins against Michigan State on Friday and Saturday (10-0 and 11-3), Michigan had just four runs against Wildcat pitcher Lauren Delaney. The sophomore ace had 18 strikeouts in two com- plete games and had shut out the Wolverines in game two until the bottom of the seventh. "They just need to work on understanding a one-pitch focus," Michigan coach Carol Hutchins said. "I don't think we were as focused as we needed to be on competing. What did we think? 'They were going to come in and let us win?"' Freshman pitcher Jordan Taylor (24-2) kept the Wolver- ines alive in the second game, giving up just three hits and striking out six batters. Taylor replaced sophomore pitcher Nikki Nemitz (20-3) in the final inning of game one after Nemitz gave up nine hits and two earned runs. family saw his potential to play pro- fessionally as far back as high school, but seeing him make the jump to the NFL in the most prestigious way still conjured up great emotion. "We were a little nervous, but we're enjoying it," Denise Long said. "It's real now." For Jake Long, the moment also brought a sense of relief that the draft process is over. Since Michigan's season-ending victory over Florida in the Capi- tal One Bowl, Long has endured months of workouts, evaluations and interviews, all leadingup to one day. Now that the draft has passed, he can get back to doing what he loves most: playing football. Long deflected questions about his sudden wealth, a potential bud- ding rivalry with former Ohio State linebacker Vernon Gholston (picked sixth overall by the New York Jets) and calls from Florida realtors. But he eagerly spoke about being excited to meet his new Dolphins teammates and familiarize himself with the coaches and playbook. "I want to go in there and work hard every day," Long said. "I want to show my leadership that I have in college with the great work ethic, lead by example, and go out there and keep doing the same thing I've been doing." Offensive tackle Jake Long was selected first overall in this year's NFL.Draft.
