10 Monday, June 16, 2008 The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com LIL WAYNE From Page 9 revelatory and frankly, they aren't even the best we've heard from him in the past year and a half. But it's the way that he uses his associa- tive thought process in these scat- tershot beats that is so astonishing: form representing content. The real moment at which Tha Carter III becomes more than just another Lii Wayne release is "Phone Home." Wayne goes all George Clinton a la Starchild, pro- claiming himself from another planet. Dubious and pretentious as it might seem, it's the perfect senti- ment to describe Wayne as an MC: He's no longer what the mainstream saw him as, making a leap into more adventurous and, frankly, intel- lectual, literate territory. Sure, Tha Carter III has what will prove to be enormous radio hits (the already huge "Lollipop," "A Milli" and "Got Money") but you'd be hard-pressed to find another rapper willing to say "Lock, load, aim at any target / I could get your brains for a bar- gain, like I bought it, from Target." It's his ingenuity, nonchalance and desire to say any and everything that comes to his mind that will ultimately mark Wayne, and Tha Carter III, as undeniable classics. Though, even with all the signs pointing toward this being Wayne's coming out party, it's all hearsay. Tha Carter III is put in a stasis that most records don't ever approach. As it stands, this disc is a beautiful collection of very good - with few objectively great - tracks. Though it will almost certainly be known as the moment when Wayne became something entirely apart from his past incar- nations, it could just come out that he's actually a Martian. SEDARIS From Page 9 of his humor, whatcould have been a fairly unremarkable book signing became a lesson in perspective. Sedaris is not a punchline man. He doesn't tell jokes, or use voices. He hardly even emphasizes his words. And yet, when, in a pause while reading from his book he looked up to remark, "Oh my, there's an empty chair here. Who's old? Old woman, sit in that chair!" the audience exploded. For Sedaris, humor is a mat- ter of perspective. He recounts the story of his boyfriend, who lived in Africa as a child, with dry incredulity. "If I were a child, and I saw a worm sticking out of my mother's leg, I would march straight to an orphanage," he recounted. I can only imagine that he went downstairs later to ask the man- agers about the size of his angry crowd, only to have a good laugh. After all, driving four hours only to stand screaming, trying to see a man who tells jokes for a liv- ing? That is funny. 4 -I i M - ..*, To play: Complete the grid so that every row, column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1to 9. There is no guessing or math involved, just use logic to solve.
