Tuesday, May 29, 2007 The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com 11 ARTS IN BRIEF FILM Verhoeven redeems himself with evocative epic "Black Book" The Michigan Theater Sony Pictures Classics Though Paul Verhoeven ("Hol- low Man") holds a place in his- tory as the first person to accept a Razzie - the anti-Academy Award given for exceptionally egregious achievements in film - in person, he finally proves he is capable of being a posi- tive cinematic influence with "Black Book." Set in 1940's Hol- land, "Black Book" is an alter- native look at World War II and the Holocaust. The film carries all the solemnity and respect a dedicatory piece toward this era should, and adds a certain emo- tional and political complexity. There are two faults with "Black Book." First, the movie expects the viewer to believe a Jewish woman and a Nazi offi- cer could love each other despite knowledge of who the other is. And, it expects the viewer to be FILM able to keep pace with all of theD plot twists in which characters Russe reveal themselves to be spies and c4 even double agents. She wrote, directed and co-stars in this film about three Southern wait- resses lost in different places deep within the maze of midlife. Keri Russell (TV's "Felicity") plays the lead role of Jenna, a sin- cere, self-sacrificing young wife with one big problem: She hates her husband. That problem becomes even bigger when Jenna learns she is pregnant, cornering her further into a life she yearns to escape.
