Sm Monday, May 7, 2007 # The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com BJORK From page 11 All this flesh on our bones / Let me push you up against me tightly / And enjoy every bit of you." In a musical environment dominated by "getting one's eagle on," this coy sexuality stands as one of Bjdrk's underrated qualities and something that appears on nearly all of her albums. Each track so unique, yet some- how has all the typical Bjork traits: boomingvocals, syncopated melodies and gorgeously intricate instrumentation. Her only slip is the overtly political and aggressive "Declare Independence," and even this track can't be considered a com- plete throwaway. Simply put, the distorted bass and exceed- ingly political message ("Declare independence / Don't let them do that to you") are not Bjfrk's style. The song becomes incon- sequential, especially preceding the excellent aforementioned "My Juvenile."When the pedals of the piano have been released and Volta finally comes to a close, all the pre- album hype, all the collaborations and all the speculations are gone. Somehow, Bjirk brought several of the most innovative, polarized artists together to create her best album in years. That's what every- one has come to expect. KAHN From page 11 After moving to Berlin and forming "The Painted Bird" -named after the controversial 1965 novel by Jerzy Kosinski - Kahn and a company of Klezmer and Balkan players created a thick musical brew described, ever so fondly, as Verfremdungsklezmer. That is to say, a heavy dose of Radical Yiddish Song, a chunk of Punk Cabaret, a smidgen of Goth- ic American Folk and a splash of Klezmer Danse Macabre. The kind ofmusic better experi- enced live than in the pages of any overwrought music magazine. Opening Thursday's show will be Ann Arbor's own brilliant folk- duo Breathe Owl Breathe. The group will be supporting its new- est full-length album Canadian Shield, which is already one of the best records of 2007. Breathe Owl Breathe makes music of honest curiosity: Music that confounds a listener with its relentless humility, while some- how entrancing an audience with its loveliness at the same time. The interweaving strings of melody from Andrea Moreno- Beal'scello and Micah Middaugh's acoustic guitar always reveal a story to be told. It's only when the two of them begin to sing that the story becomes clearer. All the while, the audience can't help but clap, sing and laugh along. A good concert is often noth- ing short of romantically exces- sive. Concertgoers should expect nothing less than an intimate and heartfelt performance from both groups this Thursday night - one that bears the handprint of real people making real art for a real audience.
