Volta turns in
right direction

There are few things that can
be said about Bjork that haven't
already been said. Good and bad
alike, she's heard it all: musical
genius, fashionably challenged,
innovator, childish extrovert.
When word started to spread
about Volta, her
latest release,

hype escalated, the general senti-
ment remained unchanged: There
was absolutely no way anyone could
successfully work with all of these
artists and still release a coherent
album. Except Bjork.
Tracks slowly leaked onto the
Internet while Bjork herself started
posting the singles on her MySpace
page. The first song to hit the web
was Volta opener "Earth Intrud-
ers." The track begins with the
slow plodding of footsteps; the
footsteps of Bjirk and the musical
army behind her. She whispers,
"We are the Earth intruders" over
tribal drumbeats and soaring, oth-

erworldly keyboards. She's laying
the path for the rest of the album,
warning the listener of the musical
battleground ahead.
Next, Bjork boasts the Timbal-
and produced "Innocence." Remi-
niscent of the electronics and pop
sensibilities last seen on her pre-
vious release, Post, it is the most
accessible song on Volta.
Timbaland's influence is
instantly noticeable. The
stop-and-go digital
traffic jam carries
Timbo's heavy kick-
drum and staccato
keyboards.
As with most
Bjork albums,
the singles
are only the tip of
the iceberg. The

Antony and
the John-
sons adds
vocals on
two differ-
ent tracks, ' a;.
"Dull Flame
of Desire" and
the album
closer "My
Juvenile."
Bjork rarely

Birds to fly at Kerrytown

and Breathe Owl Breathe - two
of the most original and eclectic
groups to emerge from the Ann
Arbor area - will perform at Ker-
rytown Concert House this Thurs-
day night.
Forming two equally essential
parts of Michigan's Earthwork
Music Collective, Kahn and Breathe
Owl Breathe both write music
rooted in folk traditions, yet nearly
impossible to classify. Except to

After years of traveling, late-night
piano gigs, punk circus parades and
directing-producing-acting-com-
posing for theatre works in New
Orleans, Detroit, New York and
even Ann Arbor, the word "prolific"
hardly suffices Kahn's work ethic.
It certainly wouldn't be fair to
classify Kahn's music as simply
"indie folk," but his earliest record-
ings evoked comparisons to the
experimental folk of Tom Waits and
Nick Cave. In recent years,however,
Kahn has more than transcended
the genre.
