Coleman donates $100,000 to Northern Iowa

University President Mary Sue
Coleman recently gave $100,000 to
the University of Northern Iowa in
memory of her father, Leland Wil-
son, who was a professor at the uni-
versity before his death in 1993.
President Coleman's gift will
go toward creating the Leland
Wilson Endowed Chemistry Lec-
tureship Fund, which ainns to con-
tinue a series of science lectures at
the University of Northern Iowa,
University spokeswomnan Kim
Broekhuizen said.
Wilson wan the fist head of the
chemistry department at the Uni-
versity of Northern Iowa, a posi-
tion he held from 19h8 to 1979.
Broelehuizen said the gift was a
personal donation front Coleman
and her husband Kenneth. Cole-
man svas the featuered speaker at
the first lecture in the series.
Bill Harwood, current head of
the University of Northern Iowa
chemistry department, said the
annual lectures feature a speaker
and are followed by a reception for
the public. The lecture also gives
faculty and students the opportu-
nity to meet with the speaker the
following day.
"It's a chance to reach out to
the public and show the exciting
thitngs that go on in science," he
said.
The lecture series was initiated
10 years ago wnith a donation from
Wilson's family, and has continued
