Tuesday, May 1,2007 The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com 11 ARTS IN BRIEF FILM Psychic powers not n1ecessary to predict Cage flop "Next" At Quality 16 and Showcase Paramount In "Next," a run-of-the-mill action flick, Nicolas Cage ("Nation- al Treasure") plays Cris Johnson, a Las Vegas magician who can see exactly two minutes into his own future. Scamming casinos, stealing cars, deterring dastardly villainous plots; it's all acceptable until we get to the part where Jessica Biel's ("The Illusionist") character (Liz) falls deeply in love with Johnson. Not even Cage's biting quips, cheery detachment or dashing Robert Langdon hairdo can come close to selling that one. Based on a story by Philip K. Dick - the man who gave us "Blade Runner" and "Minority Report" - "Next" lacks the intellect and gravity of those films, replaced here by empty dramatics and bland pyrotechnics. With a woefully unimaginative screenplay shoddily scampering to a "twist" ending, "Next" feels like an exhaustive waste of time. About the biggest twist here is that the credits roll backward. August wraps the summer up with a more modest selec- tion including "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Rush Hour 3." Prediction: Jason Bourne makes phone calls to his ene- mies when he's looking right at them, and Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan experience a variety of language and cultural barriers which lead to hilarity. And if you want con- edies that aren't based on racial stereotypes, try Judd Apatow's very promising "Knocked Up," the incred- ibly awkward "Superbad" or "Shark vs. Eagle" - if you're in a "Napoleon Dyna- mite" mood. This assortment of comedies will be debuting throughout the summer months. After a deso- late winter, this summer's releases will be a much =F needed change.
