Guy Vander Jagt, who led House Repub- licans' election strategy for years and was a confidant of Gerald Ford before and during his presidency, died June 29 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 75. Known for his oratory skills, he held various lead- ership posts, including the second- ranking Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee. For 18 years, he was also chair- man of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which helps GOP House candidates nationwide with fundraising, orga- nization and strategy. Ford became president when Nixon resigned in 1974, but went on get planning process and worked to improve academic programs. He was also a professor of busi- ness economics at the University, an expert in the area of manage- rial economics and he co-wrote the textbook, "Business Economics: Principles and Cases." Averell Harriman to establish the institute formerly known as the Russian Institute. He was the lon- gest-serving director of the Harri- man Institute and retired in 1986. In 1949, he joined the Depart- ment of State, serving as an infor- mation officer for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York and then as special assistant to Secretary of State Dean Acheson between 1950 and 1953. He later became associate direc- tor of the Russian Research Center at Harvard University. In 1992, Vander Jagt was defeat- ed in the Republican primary, a rare upset of a sitting congressman. He and other members of the Ways and Means Committee had come under heavy criticism after they were video taped on a taxpayer- funded trip to Barbados. and served as dean at the business schools at Washington University and Texas Christian University. Originally from Oklahoma, Whitaker received a bachelor's degree in economics from Rice Uni- versity, as well as both a masters and a doctorate degree from the Univer- sity of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Navy ROTC and served in the Navy after his graduation from Rice.
