12. Monday, June 11, 2007 The Michigan Daily - michigandaily.com OFFENSE From page11 balls into the outfield, via air mail. The Wolverines recorded just one hit that dropped down into the outfield, a fourth-inning single by sophomore Jason Christian. "We know how the infield is," Maloney said. "The game wasn't won totally by the infield. They didn't get many hits, either. It is what it is. You can't change your approach. You still swing the same way, and you still play the same way. You just play the game and whatever happens, happens." With an offense that struggled to find hits yesterday, Michigan will have to rely on smart, ath- letic base running in the next two games if it wishes to topple the Beavers inthe best-of-three series. But base running wasn't some- thing the Wolverines excelled in during yesterday's loss. In the fifth inning, junior left- fielder Derek VanBuskirk found base after an infield single to the shortstop. Not known for his stealing prowess, VanBuskirk sur- prised the Oregon State defense when he took off for second dur- ing the net at bat. The Beavers didn't shift over to receive to toss from catcher Mitch Canham, and the ball tumbled into the outfield. VanBuskirk, not realizing that centerfielder Chris Hopkins had fumbled with the ball, slid headfirst into second base, missing a chance to gain an extra bag. In the next at bat, second baseman Kevin Cislo beat out a throw from the pitcher on a single that would have easily sent VanBuskirk home had he been on third. If the Wolverines wish to pull off the two straight victories nec- essary to book a trip to the Col- lege World Series in Omaha, Neb., they'll have to capitalize on the few opportunities the Beavers' slow-moving turf will give them. BASEBALL From page 11 everybody on ourteamknows thatwe are a very, very even match with this other ballclub. As a team, the story of the last couple weeks has been being the underdog and pulling through, and obviously we're in that same spot right now, so we're all feeling very comfortable and very confident."
