And thank- a Not just a Street Art Fair By MAUREEN SULLIVAN DailyArts Writer So many students come to college with high expectations of becoming immersed in culture, avoiding the mindless party scene and attending' concerts, art exhibits and theater performances in the community. The stress of the year coupled with the ease of stumbling from bar to house party, we forget about these seeminglynaive hopes. It's not too late: Campus has cleared out for the summer and there are plenty of stimulating outdoor arts events and festivals going on in the city. The first of these is the Ann Arbor Book Festival, which runs May17through May20. The event's goal is to promote literacy through a series of programs taking place in the city. Though many of the events are geared toward children, stu- dents who are interested in writing or who simply enjoy reading might appreciate the numerous authors in residence and the compelling panel discussions. As the heat of summer begins to set in, the Ann Arbor Summer Fes- tival, a 23-year tradition, will take place from June 15 through July 8. The fair will be going on all over town and will feature street per- formers including the European circus dance troupe Strange Fruit, a contemporary dance performance by famed dancer Mikhail Barysh- nikov ("The Russian" from "Sex and the City") and concerts from Lyle Lovett and k.d.lang. The biggest arts event of sum- mer is undoubtedly the Ann Arbor Art Fair. The event literally envel- ops the city and transfroms it into a mecca for the arts as 1,200 artists from all over the country gather in Ann Arbor to display their work. The event takes place from July 18 through 21 and is a must see for those in Ann Arbor over the summer. This isn't to say that the house party or bar nights aren't worth- while - they are. But, take achance on a Saturday afternoon and attend the book festival, the art fair or the ongoing Shakespeare performanc- es in the Arb during the month of June. Most students will only be in this folk-rooted and art-infused college town for four years, so, take advantage of it.
