14 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, July 17, 2006 SPORTS Not in Kansas anymore: 'M' golfer finds stroke at home course, wins title By Scott Bell Daily Sports Editor There's no place like home. Just ask Lindsay Davis. The junior to-be member of the Michigan Vomen's golf team used her home-course advantage to help propel her to a victory at the GAM Michigan Women's Amateur tour- nament this week. She defeated defending champion Mandi McConnel on Friday in the finals for the victory. "I have come in second so many times," Davis said. "To win on my home course and have the majority of members out watching and having so much support and to accom- plish what I did - I am feeling that I am on top of the world right now." Davis got over the hump against McCon- nel, who plays collegiate golf for rival Michi- gan State. Though she already was motivated to win the title, being pitted against a rival didn't hurt, either. "The college rivalry came into it big time," Davis said. "I almost wore all blue and gold today. But I -figured the bag, the towel and head covers were enough. That's a mental edge for sure." McConnel had also defeated Davis's young- er sister in the first round of the tournament. "My sister is going to be a senior in high school and she has no experience, but just because (McConnel) beat my sister, I had a little bit of a chip on my shoulder," Davis said. Davis disposed of McConnel 4 & 2 in the final match. Earlier in the day, the Dexter native won her semifinal match against Chris- tina Cibrario 5 & 4. But the win in the finals was far from guar- anteed as McConnel came in as the favorite. Along with being the defending champion, she was also the medalist in stroke play. But Davis came back from a so-so per- formance in stroke play by playing refined golf on her home course of Barton Hills Country Club. "My stroke play this week was average. I had a different attitude in the last four matches. I played with very high intensity. My first stroke play match I was just kind of slumpy, but then in match play I was really FOREST CASEY/Daily confident," Davis said. Uindsay Davis felt right at home en route to a toumament title. 4 4 NOTES Two women's hoops players represent Canada during the summer Last week, sophomore to-be Stephany Skrba tried out for the Following the exhibition series against Brazil, the team will tour Canadian women's Senior National Basketball Team.
