16 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, June 5, 2006 SPORTS POINT/COUNTERPOINT Michigan sports year in review With the baseball and softball seasons coming to a disappointing end over the past two weekends, it has officially brought an end to one of the worst years in Michigan sports history. The sports editors this summer debate on some of the big issues from the past year, and what SCOTT may happen in the future. H. JOSE BELL BOSCH Most disappointing team of the year SCOTT: Well, there are a lot to pick from, but there's no question in my mind it has to be the men's basketball team. Expectations weren't high to start the year, but once the Wolver- ines started 16-3, it's safe to say most fans were expecting a little more than an NIT run. JOSE: Yes, the basketball team was a disappointment, but if you want to talk about expecta- { tions, what about the football team? Henne and Hart were a year older, the team still had Avant and Breaston, and they were a preseason No. 4 team. The student body expects far more out of the football team, and they only make it to a bowl game officiated by the Sun Belt Conference?! SB: And yet, the football team at least made a bowl game. 65 basketball teams were able to say that they made the big dance, and Michigan wasn't one of them. Most pleasant surprise of the year JB: This has to go to the Michigan baseball team. It lost its top four pitchers, top three SB: I'm going to have to agree with you there, but I'd also like to point out the wrestling team. hitters and arguably its biggest (and shortest) team leader. Yet the Wolverines went Sure, year in and year out, the team is competitive with nearly everyone, so I wouldn't on to win the regular season and conference tournament title. Not even the softball necessarily call them a surprise, but beating the No. 1team in the nation and winning the team could do that. outright title for the Big Ten regular season definitely warrants some praise from me. Team most likely to redeem itself next season SB: I'm going to have to go with the football team here. I think the changes at coordinator, especially on the defensive end, are going to fire this squad up. Hart should be healthy, Henne should be hungry and fans won't have to stare painfully at tentative fourth-quarter defenses all season long. JB: All I have to say is road games at Notre Dame and Ohio State and you know the football team will have at least two losses. I'm going to go with the hockey team. Ten of the 11 freshman from last season are back, and the new defenseman and goalie will be welcome improvements. Team most likely to see more losing in the future. JB: I hate to say it because I consider myself a Tommy fan, but I don't see the basketball team building on its "success" from last season. Maybe Bill Martin SB: I think the team that may have the most trouble getting back on the winning track might can hire Whoopi Goldberg to coach? It worked for the Knicks, didn't it? actually be the only team that's really had a lot of success lately: the softball team. The nucleus from the national title team is now gone, and with other Big Ten teams like Northwestern catching up, the days of dominance may be numbered (or over) for the Maize and Blue. j JOIN DAILY ~SPORTS.« treatedWHERE VULGARITY comdy 4 b AND WASTED bLwwen atho 1/ Fsi "0SPACE ARE THINGS 1/ANEFS OF THE PAST. anySweet & COFFEEL Creamy bevege wwwbeeermyo Fr#. & Sat.- 8 &B , M:3WpmWE PROMISE.
