VIDEO
Continued from page 3
Gregory Whiting, an LSA sophomore, said the use
of videos did not feel that the use of videos was either
commendable or deplorable.
"It is one of their many tactics for getting the fresh-
men class distribution that they seek each year. It is
not fair in the sense that other students don't have
tapes as well, but in terms of a big picture perspective
it doesn't matter," he said.
Residential College philosophy professor Carl
Cohen said that the University's efforts to attract
minority students were honorable, but that students
should not be treated differently.
"When our University sends a video to students
admitted who are of one color, but not to those of
another color, that is discrimination by race, and
however well meant is very troubling," Cohen said.
Lucier said the idea for an admissions video came
from the Medical School, who had been sending their
own video to all admitted medical students and had
found it to be successful.
Future use of an admissions video may vary from a
congratulatory message to acting as an actual accep-
tance letter, Lucier said. He added that the Office of
Undergraduate Admissions would decide this sum-
mer exactly how they wanted to use the video and
how broadly it would be sent.
