2 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, June 16, 2003 NEWS I Prof. prepares to leave 'U' to follow husband to New York A construction worker walks through Hill Auditorium located on North University, last Friday. The renovations in the auditorium are scheduled to be completed in January. By Sarah Reaume For the Daily Having completed her final lec- ture at the University, psychology Prof. Ann Merriwether will be missed as she heads for the east coast after seven years. "Though I am not even a psychol- ogy major, I happily followed her from class to class; she had the ability to captivate, motivate, and engage her students, whether she was in a lecture of 600 people or a seminar of 20," LSA junior Erica Greene said. Though sad to be leaving, Merri- wether is excited to be moving to her family farm with her husband and two daughters, age five and nine. She said she will continue teach- ing the introduction to psychology class at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where her husband has also been hired to con- tinue teaching. "It was a decision of necessity," Merriwether said. "I'll tell you honestly, my hus- band is an assistant professor of anthropology and he did not get tenure. He does genetics, it's pretty hard to do genetics anywhere." This is not the first time Merri- wether has relocated as she came to the University after teaching at Penn State for about six years. But she is reluctant to leave the University as she is "very happy here in the Psychology Department, so it's sad to be leaving." Several members of the psycholo- gy department reflect those senti- ments as well. "I think she's been a wonderful teacher, she's a great member in the developmental area and we're very sorry to see her go," said Toni Antonuc- ci, professor of psychology and chair of developmental psychology. Stephen Rassi has been a gradu- ate student instructor who worked with Merriwether in her Psych 111 class for two semesters. "She covers topics like the psy- chological aspects of various meth- ods of childbirth, and aspects of developmental psychology relating to sexual orientation and gender identity - important topics that impact our lives, but which often are glossed over in classrooms else- where," Rassi said. "She has been a real inspiration to me, and she is a good role model for those of us who are learning to be better instructors," Rassi added. Merriwether has impacted stu- dents as well. "It was evident every time she entered the classroom how passion- ate she was about her job and what she was teaching, and how much she cared about her students. She made course material relevant to our lives," Greene said. After completing her Psych 111 class, LSA senior Daniel Aghion said that she nominated her to receive the Golden Apple Award. "I declared my major after taking her class. She introduced me to the biopsych field," Aghion said. Merriwether said what she will miss the most are "the people that are here, my colleagues, the staff, all the people, and of course the graduate students and the undergrad students." "Thank goodness for e-mail and that the world's gotten a little small- er," Merriwether added.
