Maloney has a great ey for talent, and two of his pitchers - Bryan Bullington and Luke Hagerty - are projected to be first round picks in this year's draft. Bullington was a highly sought after recruit who Mal- oney nabbed and who may be the 'first overall pick, while Haggerty was an undeveloped player who Mal- oney saw potential in and signed. After Michigan's dismal season (14-17 Big Ten, 21-32 overall), Mal- oney has his work cut out for him. "Currently, the program is down a bit," Maloney said. "There is no doubt about it, and it definitely needs a lift. We feel we need to be at the top of the Big Ten. "I was able to do some pretty spe- cial things at Ball State University, and I expect that that experience will help us to restore the rich tradition of Michigan baseball." Maloney will not be able to recruit for next season, since most of the premier recruits have already been signed and Michigan has already offered scholarships to players. For now, Maloney will have to live with what he has. "I think there are some very good players in the program," Maloney said. "We are going to need to get quite a few more, but I'm optimistic that with a fresh attitude and an increase in positive energy, these kids will be able to make a positive contribution next year." Maloney told the Star Press of Muncie, Ind. that Rick Rembielak of Kent State, Tracy Smith of Miami Rose admits to taking money from Martin Last week, Chicago Bulls guard and "Fab Five" member Jalen Rose admit- ted to taking money from banned booster Ed Martin. Rose said Martin gave him pocket money but did not dis- close how much he received. According to Fox Sports Net, Rose was given money so that he could buy clothes or go to the movies. Rose was interviewed by investiga- tors but was not indicted as one of the players who received money from Mar- tin. Rose, like fellow "Fab Five" mem- ber Chris Webber, said Martin began giving him money before attending Michigan. - Staff reports Michigan sixth in Sears' Cup standings After the spring sports season, Michigan placed sixth in the Sears' Director's Cup Standings with 736 points. Points are awarded based on overall position in a sport, with 100 points awarded to the national cham- pion. Stanford is in first place with 1,369.5 points, thanks to national championships in women's tennis and water polo. - Staff reports Blue runners impressive at NCAAs Webb, Brannen and Wisniewski walk away with national honors By Nicholas Flees For the Daily Three members of the Michigan men's track and field team - fresh- men Alan Webb and Nathan Brannen and senior tri-captain Mike Wis- niewski - competed this past week in the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Champi- onships in Baton Rouge, La. All three will return to Ann Arbor with All- America honors in their respective events. Michigan tied for 28th place over- all with nine points, but the individ- ual accomplishments of its three representatives were much more impressive. "We didn't have a real successful Big Ten meet, but I'm pretty pleased with the way things have gone," coach Ron Warhurst said. "It's been really successful." Wisniewski set the tone Thursday n+h wih a 1 nth-nlar~29.'7.74in Rich Maloney can't contain his excitement over being named coach. and Notre Dame associate head coach Brian O'Connor were also candidates for the job. He also said that at Michigan his budget will extend from $52,969 at Ball State to $800,000 at Michigan. Hopefully with the extra resources, Maloney can match how well he played against Michigan with how well the Wolverines can play for him. o,{:a S PROBL Any tin $ervkng ! His performance was good enough to earn him All-Ameri- ca status - an honor placed upon the top eight American finishers in each event - for the first time in his track and field career. "It was a nice way to finish his sen- ior year at Michigan," Warhurst said. Brannen followed suit, placing fifth in the 800-meter run Friday night with a time of 1:46.00, breaking a six-year-old school record. "Placing didn't really matter to me today," Brannen said. "Normally 1:46.00 would have been a solid sec- ond. I'mjust pretty pumped." In addition to earning All-America status, Brannen's time qualified him for the Commonwealth Games to be played this summer in England. "It's going to be a bright summer," he said. Webb capped off the meet with a fourth-place 3:43.23 in the 1,500- meter run. Webb broke out to an early lead. which he maintained for the first 1,450 meters of the race, only to be overtaken down the homestretch. His time earned him his second All-America honor of the year, hav- ing been named a cross country All- American in the fall. Whether Webb, the American high school record-holder in the mile, will stay at Michigan for his sophomore year, however, remains to be seen. Webb has neither confirmed nor denied speculation that he will forego the remainder of his college career in order to become a professional run- ner. But he has made it clear that the decision will be made at some point over the summer. Regardless, Warhurst maintains an optimistic perspective. "(The meet) sets a good stage for next year and our incoming freshmen. It'll be fun." Host Louisiana State took the team title with 64 points, edging out Ten- nessee with a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay.
