Water poio magic
runs out at NCAAs
After a run to the NCAA Champi-

their record against West Coast teams
to 0-11 for the season.
Michigan fell 6-4 in the third-place
game against Loyola Marymount yes-
terday to finish its season with an
impressive mark of 25-13.

Expanded field could
shiftCCHA tourney
A year after the CCHA expanded its
tournament field to 12 teams, the
NCAA has decided to expand its tour-
nament to a 16-team field comprised
of four regions.
This change in the national tourna-
ment means the CCHA tournament,
which will keep last year's format, will
have to start Thursday this year instead
of Friday.

'M) golfers earn first
ever berth to NCAAs
By Chris Burke
Daily Sports Writer
The Michigan women's golf team
was watching its season blow away in
the treacherous weather conditions at
Forest Akers golf course in East Lans-
ing during the three-round, 54-hole
NCAA Central Regional Saturday.
Needing an eighth place or better
finish to qualify for the NCAA Cham-
pionships in Auburn, Wash. in two
weeks, the Wolverines sat at 59-over
par and in 10th place after Friday's sec-
ond round.
"We have our work cut out for us,"
Michigan coach Kathy Teichert said
after Friday's round about the team's
chances of rallying to lock up a spot in
the NCAA Championships. "There are
a lot of good teams out here, (but) we
are a lot better than we have played."
Michigan proved Teichert's statement
true Saturday, storming back with a
team score of 294 (+6) after rounds of
313 and 322 in the tournament's first
two rounds. Saturday's performance
was enough to propel the Wolverines
into a sixth-place finish and, more
importantly, the school's first-ever
berth in the NCAA Championships.
"I don't even know how to describe
this," Teichert said. "All year long,
these girls keep amazing me with every
tournament. They have really worked
hard, and this is pure icing on the cake."
Bess Bowers' performance stood out
for Michigan competitors, as the veter-
an linkster finished the tournament in a
logjam at 1lth-place individually with a
15-over par score of 231. Bowers post-
ed an impressive 73 (+1) on the tourna-
ment's final day when Michigan
desperately needed low scores.
Tulsa won the tournament with a
team score of 914. Ohio State, Texas,
Purdue, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma
and Michigan State are the six other
teams that will join Michigan and Tulsa
at the NCAA Championships.

up that inning, so give credit to them
for getting on base," Moulden said.
Ohio State's only score came on a
Stacy Roth RBI-single, knocking in
second baseman Jennifer Link in the
bottom frame. But after the inning
Young went to work, allowing just
two hits with just one runner reaching
second base.
"Marissa got stronger as the game
went on," Ohio State coach and Big
Ten Coach of the Year Linda
Kalafatis said. "It's fair to say that
she probably wasn't on her game at
the beginning, and she did a very nice
Do
job of stepping up like a leader
should."
Young held Ohio State's Big Ten
Player of the Year Wendy Allen and
Kristine Himes - the Buckeyes'
home run leader - to a combined 0-
for-4 hitting.
This victory was special because it
was the first time for this senior class
that the Wolverines won both the reg-
ular season and tournament titles.
"I challenged the seniors before
this weekend,".Hutchins said. "Their
class had won both this conference
and this tournament, but they had
never done both (in the same season).
So I am very proud of them. They are
our leaders."
