The Michigan Daily - Monday, July 15, 2002 - 9 li WHAT'S NEWS IN ENTERTAINMENT JOHN FRANKENHEIMER DEAD AT 72 - Prolific film director John Frankenheimer died of a stroke last Saturday after under- going spinal surgery. He directed over 40 films, including "The Manchurian Candi- date" starring Frank Sinatra and more recently, "Ronin" with Robert DeNiro. His final feature was 2000s "Reindeer Games" with Charlize Theron, Ben Affleck and Gary Sinise. "SUPERMAN VS. BATMAN" BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE - Director Wolfgang Peter- son told MTV about his hopes to bring the all-American titan Superman to the big screen alongside his vengeful, darker counterpart, the Batman. Peterson is quot- ed as saying the two will collide in a post- Sept. 11 world, where their very different ideals will lead to dissention between the two crimefighters. Superman represents sort of everything clear and bright and noble. He represents our hopes and ideals. Batman, on the other hand, represents the dark and obsessive and vengeful side." Peterson went on to say that he hoped to find dramatic actors, as opposed to "action heroes" to fill the title roles. JACKO BLAMES POOR RECORD SALES ON RACISM, NOT HORRIBLE ALBUM - Michael Jackson, the self-proclaimed King of Pop, has accused Sony of racism in the promotion of last October's "Invincible" album. Billboard.com reports that Jackson has the support of friend and civil rights advocate Rev. Al Sharpton and attorney Johnny Cochran. During a press confer- ence, Jackson claimed that Sony Music Entertainment Chairman Tommy Matola was both racist and "devilish." The former pop superstar then held up a picture of Matola with devil horns drawn on. Record executives and other black performers alike are stating that Jackson's crusade doesn't interest them, and that they have never felt such racism themselves in the industry. Jackson counters that if his fans back him, they will be fighting for the rights off all black performers, "living or dead." Singer, civil rights crusader, man: Michael Jackson.
