BCS will
have new
look this
season
RALEIGH, NC. (AP) - The
CAA has determined a new formula
for the Bowl Championship Series,
one year too late for Hurricane fans.
Under the new system, Miami
instead of Florida State would have
played Oklahoma in last year's title
game.
Teams will now receive bonus
points for heating opponents ranked in
the top 15 of the BCS standings.
This year's rankings will be
released in the second week of Octo-
ber, which is one week earlier than
last season.
From that point
on, points for
quality wins
over top 15
teams will be
on a sliding4
scale depend-
teams move up
ad down the poll.
For example, a win over a team
ranked in September would get you no
quality-win points in the final BCS
standings if the team you beat drops
out of the polls.
In addition, teams with two wins
over the same quality opponent would
only get credit for one, quality win.
Meanwhile, some coaches com-
plained that the margin of victory por-
tion of the formula was bad for the
game and promoted running up scores
against lesser opponents.
To address that aspect, the BCS will
replace two of the eight computer
services next season, including the
Dunkel Index, which depended heavi-
ly on margin of victory. Also out of
the mix is she New York Times' com-
puter ratings.
NCAA TOURNEY GOES LOCAL: The
NCAA is changing bracketing rules
for the men's basketball tournament so
allow teams to play closer so home
during the first two rounds.
Beginning next March, the NCAA
Division I Men's Basketball Commit-
tee will assign the top four seeds in
each region to subregional sites with
an emphasis on reducing travel,
regardless of where the teams would
play in regionals the following week.
The committee also will now have
*the flexibility so place she fourth team
selected from a conference in the
same region as the highest-seeded
team from that conference. Previously,
once the highest-seeded team from a
conference was assigned a region, no
other team from that conference could
be assigned there until the sixth team
was selected from that conference.
The committee also will no longer
1* place a team seeded fifth at a potential
"home-crowd disadvantage" in the
first round. Previously, the committee
had afforded that protection only to
teams seeded one through four.
