a e Mi Jasan Radford of Onesidezero gives it his all. New me tal Wband invadelhsStAnrw By Andy Schwegler For the Daily As of late, the great state of Califor- nia has been a breeding ground for new and upcoming rock bands. Within a year, countless ws r bands have broken mdzro ito mainstream music, most notably St. Andrews Hall Papa Roach, the yt 10,2001 Deftones and Linkin Park. Now Onesideze- ro has their eyes set 1 on a piece of the rock pie. Having just recently signed with Maverick records and fresh out of the studio with their amazing new release Is This Room Getting Smalle; the band was itching to hit the nation's kighways to promote their new album. One of their stops with punk-rock band Zebrahead was St. Andrews Hall. A mistake on the venue's part for not booking a local band made the wait almost two hours before openers Onesidezero hit the stage. With anxious punk rockers en nase, the energy level of the crowd for Onesidezero was about as high as a hung over college student in -degree weather. This didn't stop the band from pulling off one of the tightest sets seen at St. Andrews to date. Lead Singer Jasan Radford was absolutely perfect for every song giving an almost Maynard Keenan experience. Since only a few people were even mov- ing during the first few songs, Radford jumped into the crowd and joined the mosh pit, erupting the venue. All this while the rest of the band was pulling off complex chords and beats with ease. The music of Onesidezero has a very unique sound, almost Tool-esque. Bassist Cristian Hernandez and drum- mer Rob Basile created an amazing combo. Every song had a unique twist and can go in any direction, making them a joy to hear time after time, along with some very catchy hooks that make it easily marketable for the radio. If you weren't at the show to experi- ence the amazing amount of energy this band puts out, shame on you! ihin" is asiing to ' s k Ilt..Te cotmpoer anmti n iis sm i 1of the best sthe public has seen in any film. The story, on the other hand, is not Final so astonishing. Fantasy The film begins Grade: C with the main at showcase character's dream and Quality 16 in which Dr. Aki Ross (voiced by Ming-Na) is on a foreign planet sur- rounded by war- ring aliens. The scene changes to reality, where Aki is returning to the Earth to save it because alien "phantoms" have arrived via meteor, attacking and destroying much of the planet. Aki wants to find a plant, one of the few real life forms left outside of the barrier cities, and in the process she is intercepted, then assisted, by the Deep Eyes military squadron. This plant is a "spirit wave," of which there are eight; they will help to cure Aki, who has been terminally infected with an alien particle, and save humanity from the invaders. On paper, the plot sounds ambitious and impressive. In the movie, it is not nearly as clear. Though it still may be ambitious, one cannot always tell what is going on and why. Certain elements of the plot are taken for granted by the screenwriters (Al Reinert and JeffVin- tar), as aspects of the phantom beings and mechanisms they created are left unexplained. We know that a Zeus Cannon exists for destruction, but what does it do really? The actual dialogue is often uninter- esting. Not much insight is given to the individual characters through their speech. Comedy is attempted through the character Neil, but it often falls Ihoughr incsl If heir rei m ei prce belsre Ih atua pIcad little i rsortnbiruttheir e coed into tire film. With the amazing air aionr, the faults of the film are dificu: d o see. Admittedly, the animation ii ihe char- acters' mouths is done p.rey. The things they say rarely matc) how their mouths move. This seems minor in comparison to nearly any other aspect of their bodies. The animation team paid considerable attention to extreme- ly minute details, especially of the characters' faces. The phantoms are also finely done; they range from giant dragons to dinosaurs to insects. The action resulting from character and phantom interaction is engaging, despite the fact that one can't always tell why it is happening. Being a fan of the popular video game series of the same name won't help much either, as "Final Fantasy" the movie has little to do with "Final Fantasy" the game. Gosh.
