Knight Commission calls for end to 'disgraceful' NCAA By Steve Jackson Daily Sports Editor The Knight Commission, composed of 28 current and former college presi- dents and higher education officials, con- cluded that a "disgraceful environment" exists in collegiate sports. Its most publicized proposal was to require a 50 percent graduation rate in order to compete for conference champi- onships or postseason events. "Penalizing around the post-season sounds good, but it is very difficult to get that operational," said Michigan Profes- sor of Education Percy Bates, who also co-chairs the NCAA's Management Council. Thirty-four percent of basketball play- ers at the nation's largest colleges finish school, and the graduation rate is 48 per- cent for football players. At Michigan, the most recent rates were 41 percent for football players and 17 percent for men's basketball players. The Wolverines' over- all graduation rate for athletes was 6E percent. The Knight Foundation also called for the removal of commercial logos from uniforms. Bates doesn't believe the commercial influence on college sports is threatened by any ofthis talk. "You can't have it both ways," Bates said. "If you are going to have outside forces funding your program, they are, going to want recognition. That could be advertisements, uniform logos or even naming stadiums." Bates' biggest concern with the Knight Foundation's report is a lack of solutions. The foundation has no official role in making NCAA regulations. It is an out- side body that acts as the conscience of college sports. "They are well known visible people, and when they speak people listen," Bates said. "I just wish they would have provided more reasonable ideas that we could make operational."
