MM 2 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, June 18, 2001 GRANT Continued from Page 1 adequately informed," she added. Co-investigator, Dr. Nancy Janz, an associate professor in the School of Public Health, said the purpose of the study is to understand how involved patients are in the decision making process and whether they are given the opportunity to be involved. "We also want to know the extent to which participation in the decision-making process affects the patient's quality of life, " Janz said. "Decision-making is very different in cancer care," Katz said. "It has to be done quickly. It is clear that some men and women may ask their physicians to make decisions for them, but we are finding that many feel they don't have a choice. The options should be laid out." The study will be done in collaboration with Northwest- ern University, Emory University and the University of Southern California and will take place over a three-year period in Atlanta, Los Angeles and Detroit. Researchers will contact recently diagnosed breast can- cer patients either over the phone or through mailings and ask them questions about the quality of treatment they received. 19 states, including Michigan, have laws which demand doctors document that their patients have been informed of all of the treatment options available to them. "Several studies suggest that these laws may not be the answer to this problem," Katz said in a written state- ment. "Clinicians need to be engaged locally about improving the quality of patient care and our study results will help them develop new strategies to improve communication with women during a very difficult time in women's lives," he said.
