The final tally could have been 4-3 for TCU, or perhaps 4-3 in Michigan's favor. When TCU clinched the victory, two of the remaining three singles matches were in the third set and one was about to be pushed into the third. "We had some chances, but we just let them slip away," Michigan coach Mark Mees said. After Danny McCain and Zach Held each lost in straight sets, the Wolverines needed to the win all four of the remaining matches. Michigan lost the doubles point earlier in the day after Matt Wright and Henry Beam fell in a tiebreaker at the No. I position. At No. 3 and No. 5 singles, Beam and Ben Cox each won the first set and were leading in the second, while at No. I and No. 2 singles, Wright and John Long each lost the first set 7-5. As the teams played on, each match began to swing in the other team's favor. Beam and Cox struggled to fin- ish their matches while Wright and Long were poised for their comebacks. But TCU's star Esteban Carril was not about to let that happen. Carril, a Spaniard who is ranked No. 7 in the country, used the overwhelming crowd support to break Wright's serve ip the second game of the second set. After every big point, Carril would join the crowd in yelling "Vamos!," which in English means 'Let's go!" Despite the great play of Wright, who defeated a top 10 opponent in his previous match, Carril proved to be up to the challenge. He defeated Wright 6-3 in the final set to end the match. Meanwhile, Beam, Cox and Long each pushed themselves to the limit. Long was on the brink of forcing a third set, while Beam and Cox each had lost their second set. But, Michigan did not have a char -e lo. redeem itself as the remaining match- es were abandoned once Carril defeat- ed Wright. "I am happy with the effort we gave today," Mees said. "We competed very well." On Saturday, Michigan proved it could play in the Texas heat by defeat- ing Georgia State 4-1Ito advance to the second round of the NCAA tourna- ment against TCU. The Wolverines dominated all facets of the match against the Panthers. Michigan won the doubles point easily, then finished the day by getting the remaining three points in straight set victories from Long, McCain, and Cox. The final remaining competition for Michigan will be the NCAA singles championships, held May 20-23 in Athens, Ga. Matt Wright was the lone Wolverine selected to compete in the 64-player field.
