T ight-lipped Carr tells all during Media Day By Stephanie Offen Daily Sports Editor It was perfect timing. Only four days after the ESPN'USA Today poll ranked Michigan fourth, two spots higher than the AP poll, the Wolverines held their media day. answering questions about the upcom- ing season and their surprisingoy high ranking. And it was the media who informed coach Lloyd Carr about his team's accomplishment as the highest ranked Big len team in the poll, topping Wisconsin by four votes. "I don't read polls" Carr said. But he must have been reading up about his competition as he emphasized the toughness of the conference. "I remember when the Big Ten could- n't run or pass,' Carr said. "But the fact that three out of the past five leismrarn winners are from the Big Ten shows the competitiveness of the conference" And a possible Heisman candidate, wide receiver David Terrell, along with the rest of the Michigan team, was on hand to inform the media what to expect this season. "I think it's real realistic for me (to win the Heisman),' Terrell said. "That's one of my personal goals. I want to be the best receiver in the country" None of the Wolverines believe that an undefeated season, a team goal, is out of reach. But they remain realistic, remembering the mistakes of last year. "With this conference, every team can win the championship,' offensive lineman Steve Hutchinson said. "We have a tough schedule and we have the opportunity to be one of the best teams in the country but we can't slack off. We can't not play a four-quarter game like we did against Illinois. We have to come JOBS!! FALL TERM Apply now at the Law Library- *non-Lhaw Students " Law Students "S.1. Many of the players reflected on the Illinois and Michigan State losses - which they referred to as the low points of the season. But they know those mis- takes can be used as educational tools for this year. "You learn from your mistakes," senior safety DeWayne Patmon said. "You have to learn from how you played certain games such as Notre Dame, Michigan State and Illinois and even the games you play well. You try to make all the corrections to those mistakes" This years' secondary - referred to as "The Suspects" last season r- is more experienced and is touted as the strength of the defense. Even with the loss of starting safety Cato Jtune, who suffered a season ending' knee injury, the defensive backs don't think of them- By Chris Duprey Daily Sports Editor In somewhat of a surprise, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr gave fans and the press quite a lot to chew on Friday at the annual team media day on the athletic campus. Carr has made himself famous for keeping secrets, and his hiding of the Tom Brady- FOOTBALL Drew Henson Notebook quarterback attle last year reinforced that image. Friday was different. Carr gave detailed breakdowns of who would play where at every position, answered almost every question, and even tossed out a few names of freshmen he thought would con- tribute this season. Montreal native Alain Kashama I might be called upon to bolster a voung defensive line. Carr said that the freshman "has the ability to make an impact." Other times Carr was more blunt. "Remember this name: Chris Perry," selves as suspects any longer. Wide receivers Terrell and Ronald Bellamy played on both sides of the ball last year, and would like another chance this season at defense. Carr said they night get that opportunity because of injury or lack of other players to fill that position. But Carr specifically men- tioned Patmon and safety Julius Curry as possible replacements. After two years of controversy, the starting quarterback job is Drew Henson's. With Tom Brady's gradua- tion, Henson has the position all to him- self. And his teammates are glad to be heading into the season knowing exact- ly who will be leading their offense. "It gives the offense confidence knowing who is the number one guy" See MEDIA DAY, Page 15 the sixth-year coach deadpanned about Perry, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound freshman running back. Carr was just as complimentary of his veterans, saying that senior James Whitley "will be one of the better corners in the country." Those are all pretty strong words from a man whose favorite phrase last year was "I like 'em both." PROFITABLE RETURNS: Carr expressed disappointment with his team's performance on kickoff returns last season. It is an area he vowed to improve this year. Not only did Michigan often start with less-than-stellar field position after the returns, but Carr felt that the responsibility of returning kick- offs took a further physical toll on running back Anthony Thomas. "(Justin) Fargas will help with that," Carr said of the sophomore, returning after a year's absence. "Last year we had someone different each week." Thomas wasn't wildly successful returning kickoffs either, so Fargas will be welcomed back to special See GRIDDERS, Page 15 9AJ The University of Michigan WHAT'S REC Department of Recreational Sports SPOM.
