Field Day Bullock, Traylor say Martin gave 'loans' MARORIE MARSHALL Day In their first public appearance of the season, the football team gathers at Michigan Stadium for Media Day on Friday morning. More coverage, page 13. By Usa Koivu Daily News Editor Years of rumors and speculations were proven true Wednesday in a Detroit federal court; when former University basketball players Louis Bullock and Robert Traylor admitted that they had taken money from banned basketball booster Ed Martin. The two had considered the money a loan, and planned to repay Martin, Detroit attorney Steven Fishman said in an interview with The Detroit Free Press. This is the first public acknowledge- ment of any player accepting money from Martin. This comes 14 months after Bullock said "I never accepted anything from him. That's all you need to write. My parents are well off. We've never taken anything from him, we've never needed anything from him." Former University basketball players Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Maurice Taylor and Albert White have also been implicated. Martin has been banned from the University's athletic programs since March of 1997, before men's basketball coach Steve Fisher was fired for being associated with the retired Ford employee. Both Traylor and Bullock left the University after 1997, implying that they both maintained their relationship with Martin after the ban. Bullock left in 1999 and now plays for an Italian professional team.Traylor left in 1998, after his junior year, and is a member of the Cleveland Calvaliers. University officials are keeping a close eye on the investigation because any new information implicating the basketball program could result in fur- ther NCAA sanctions. Martin's home was raided in April 1999, before being arrested for his part in running a multi-million-dollar numbers operation. Agents found tens of thousands of dollars in cash as well as guns and financial records. Earlier this summer, Martin was set to plead guilty to an agreement, but he backed out of the agreement at the last moment. Martin backed out of the deal because he would have to detail his col- lege basketball dealings to both the University and the NCAA, some sources say.
