If Third World isn't one of the best-
known reggae bands of all time, they've
certainly had the most staying power.
The Kingston,
Jamaica quintet
are touring and
Third recording almost
as much these
World days as when they

Tuesday at 8 p.m. Marley two

when these self-
described "reggae
ambassadors" stop
by the Magic Bag
on Tuesday, they'll
have 25 years
worth of genre-
r'ing, pop-reggae hits in tow.
Third World formed in 1973 when
uitartst Stephen "Cat" Coore and key-

boardist Michael "Ibo" Cooper teamed
up in their native Kingston. From the
beginning, Third World set themselves
apart from the majority of Jamaican reg-
gae bands: Where most groups were
made up of self-taught provincials,Third
World were comprised of middle-class
kids with conservatory training, dazzling
audiences with their professionalism and
musicality.
After Island Records released the
group's self-titled debut in 1975, Third
World found themselves opening for
Bob Marley on his U.K. tour that sum-
mer. On their next two albums, 1977's
"96 Degrees in the Shade" and 1978's
"Journey to Addis," Third World crossed
genres and widened their fan base,
thanks largely to hits like the pop and
R&B-inflected remake of the O-Jays'
"Now That We Found Love" Though
their albums sold well in both the U.S.
and the U.K., the group, tired of playing
second-fiddle to Marley's Wailers,
decided to switch record labels, signing

popularize dance hall reggae, a reggae

what Third World recorded during the
eighties, relies heavily on electronic
instruments and pre-recorded grooves.
In recent years, Third World has returned
to their roots with a number of best-of
collections (most notably the excellent
"Reggae Ambassadors" compilation)
even while they've continued to break
new ground, mining American hip-hop,
soul and funk for new material.
