ooses Michigan
It's \ery early in the football
recruiting season with si ning day
still over seven months away, but
Michigan may have just inked one of
its top recruits for the 2005 class.
-Texas high school running back
standout David Underwood, who will
be a senior next year at Madisonville
h School, averted pressure to stay
state and chose the Wolverines
Friday.
The 6-0, 220 pound back recently
wowed onlookers at Texas A&M's
Nike Camp when he was clocked at
4.38 in the 40 yard dash.
Underwood is the fourth commit-
ment for the Wolverines and the sec-
ond highly touted out-of-state
prospect to join Michigan's upcom-
ing class. Fullback Scott McClintock
of Pennsv'vania has also verballed to
9 Wolverines.

Malchow sets world
record in 200 fly
CHARL OTTE, N.C. (AP)
Michigan graduate Tom Malehow
a sorld record in the 200-meter
b-utterfly Saturday, breaking the
mark set by Denis Pankratov of
Russia in 1995.
Malchow, the U.S. record holder
and 1996 Olympic silver medalist,
was timed in I minute, 55:18 sec-
onds in the Charlotte UltraSwim,
topping Pankratov's mark of I
minute, 55:22 seconds
The 23-year-old swimmer from
St. Paul, Minn., brought the crowd
its feet when he touched the wall
er the first 100 meters and his
split of 55:53 seconds was clearly on
world-record pace.
LSU takes CWS
title in last at-bat
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The LSU
Wers, the college baseball team of
the 1990s, captured another national
title Saturday.
Brad Cresse singled off Justin
Wayne in the bottom of the ninth,
scoring Ryan Theriot from second as
the Tigers beat Stanford 6-5 for their
fifth College World Series champi-
onship since 1991.
Theriot slid across home plate,
jumped up and tossed his batting hel-
met into the air. His teammates sur-
nded him, then seconds later, they
a made a beeline for Cresse, whoo
was standing alone between first and
second.
The celebration continued as fam-
ily, friends and fans poured onto the
Rosenblatt Stadium field.
The players donned championship
T-shirts, hats and - in typical LSU
style - Mardi Gras beads.
heriot started the ninth-inning
with a single to left, and Mike
Fontenot followed with a walk, set-
ting up Cresse's heroics.
