Daly Arts Writer After all, these David Reamer artists are rarely given prime time slots for their videos on the increasingly junior high-oriented network. But for Ece, MTV is doing something good for rck music, namely publicizing an album of lesser-known heavy metal artists. "The Return of the Rock" compilation cosnsis of 19 tracks from current rock bands more or less oriented toward heavy metal. In addition to the required tracks from MTV darlings Kid Rock and Kon, the album includes contributions from PO.D., Staind, Powerman 5000 and Incubus, just to name a few. These tracks are generally current radio singles from the bands, but don't let that sour you. The producers of the album were careful to select a mix of pOPular songs, previously unreleased tracks, and offerings from groups that have yet to record a platinum or even gold record. Some of the lesser-known bands that stand out On "The Return of the Rock' are Canadian girl band Kittie, whose "Brackish" gets minor airplay on hard rock and alternative radio stations, and Full Devil Jacket, a hard rock quartet that has made a name for itself by opening up for more popular bands on toer. Their contribution, "Stain," has been featured on several other compilations, and is typ- ical of the band's heavy sound. Several of the never, younger bands on "The Return of the Rock" contributed unreleased tracks to the collection. Boiler Room and Liquid Gang both offer songs from their forthcoming full-length albums. Dope put up a remix of their crowd-pleasing "Everything Sucks. System of a Down went a different direc- tion by donating a song that has not yet been made into a video or single, the typ- ically frantic "Suite-Ple."' On the whole, "The Return of the Rock" is an excellent indicator of whose stock is rising among young heavy metal artists, and does a fairly good job of stay- ing away from obvious answers. Whether you want to hear the singles that you know and love or expand your musical horizons, "The Return of the Rock" will entertain you. Don't get your hopes up for the return of "Headbangers' Ball," though. As long as sponsors and 13 year-olds run the net- work, this album is as close as you'll ever get to an hour of solid rock.
