CHAMPIONS
Continued from Page 1
State finished a distant second, scoring
230.85. Nebraska could only use the
crowd to finish third, scoring 229.6.
In addition to having the training and
the skill, the Wolverines exhibited the
confidence only reserved for champions.
Although Michigan respected the talents
of the opposition, leading up to the
championship the gymnasts and coaches
stressed that the Wolverines were unstop-
pable if they performed their best.
Asked at what point he thought
Michigan had the title in hand, sopho-
more co-captain Justin Toman said,
"When we walked in the door."
The title was particularly satisfying for
the lone senior on the team, co-captain
Randy D'Amura. The oldest member on
the team was the only gymnast who com-
peted before Golder came to Michigan,
and was the only one who endured a win-
less season three years ago.
Golder had this championship in mind
when he came to Michigan, although his
own plan called for five years to reach
this high point. This talented group of
Wolverines hurried up the process
though - thanks in part to the top-
ranked recruiting class this year.
"We worked harder than anyone else
in the country this year and it showed,"

assistant coach Mike Burns said.
Gymnastics is considered by many to
be an individual sport, but to the
Wolverines, winning the team title was
far and away the number one goal.
"It doesn't compare to individual
titles "junior Lalo Haro said.
"Everybody has to put their heart in to
make something like this happen. We
did it, everyone put their heart into it and
gave it 100 percent."
Team leader Toman echoed Haro's
sentiments. Toman was edged out for the
all-around title, but didn't seem to mind
after winning the team championship."I
would much rather have a national cham-
pionship ring than a plaque (for the all-
around). I would trade every all-around
title that I ever won for this team title."
This national championship com-
pletes an unprecedented turn-around for
the Wolverines. As recently as three
years ago, the Athletic Department was
considering terminating the program,
after the team had finished a despicable
0-16 in 1996. Now it is the best in the
land.
"When hockey lost, someone told me
that we were probably the best chance
for a national championship at Michigan
this year. I never thought that I would
hear that," D'Amura said. "This is what
they mean when they say 'leaders and
best."'
