Monday, May 24, 1999 - The Michigan Daily - 7 TRIALS Continued from Page 1 Massie said Mattson's decision to have the hearing is "truly a victory for the defense" The defendants charged with malicious destruction of prop- erty under $100 include David Blair, Renee Brunk, Shanta Driver, Melissa Greene, Luke Massie. Jonathan Payne, Melissa Resch, Jason Wade and Anya Wislocki. Wislocki also faces charges for assault. Before the proceedings Tuesday afternoon, supporters for the defendants circled the entrance to the courthouse, hoisting signs, and chanting "Fighting racism's not a crime, anti-racists should do no time." Tiffany Bloom, who graduated from the University earlier this nonth, said she was pleased to hear drivers honking their horns to offer encouragement to the protest. She said the action shows the community's involvement with the proceedings. "A number of people are following the cases and what's been happening," Bloom said. Supporters for the defendants collected over 6,000 signatures demanding Head Washtenaw County Prosecutor Brian Mackie drop the charges. The petition was delivered to Mackie's office by members of Ann Arbor Antimcist Defense Coalition and the National Women's Rights Organizing Coalition last Tuesday. WEAPONS Continued from Page 1 who have no felony convictions, domes- tic abuse incidents or history of mnental illness. The bill passed easily in the House with 72 votes out of a possible 110. Although the Senate delayed deliber- ations on a similar concealed weapons bill after Thursday's shoot- ings at an Atlanta-area high school, Rep. John Hansen (D-Ann Arbor) said lie expects the bill to pass in the Senate as well. Sen. David Jaye (R-Washington Twp.), who proposed the legislation in Senate, insists the bill would improve public safety and eliminate discrepan- cies which now exist between the num- ber of permits in different counties. Jaye cited the ten permits issued in Washtenaw County compared with 10,000 in his home district of Macomb County as proof of the flaws in the for- mer legislation calling it "arbitrary and capricious." Jaye said "self defense is the most important constitutional and human right; all others pale compared to this right." But others are fearful of the new leg- islation. Hansen said the bill will mean a 2 to 3 percent rise in gun permits statewide. "More guns means more opportunity for problems," such as chil- dren removing weapons from "Daddy's drawer," he said. Rep. Gilda Jacobs (D-Huntington Woods) said she is also apprehensive of the ramifications of the bill. Jacobs said "more concealed weapons mean more death and destruction in domestic squabbles, road rage, and crimes of pas- sion." Jacobs said she is opposed to Jaye's interpretation of the right to bear arms as stated in the Second Amendment. The right to bear arms "was designed to arm a militia against Britain," she said.
