oday, Augsf 9, 1999 --The Michigan Daily -3 ebsites provide easy access to student groups By Nika Schutte Daily News itor Whether students want to create a group to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, reregister a club that is already fonned or browse through hundreds of opportunities, getting involved in a University student organization is only a few steps away on the World Wide Web. This summer, Campus Information Centers, the Michigan Student Assembly and Student Activities and Leadership sponsored the cre- ation of Maize Pages, a Website providing information about campus groups. Through Maize Pages, users can find out a student group's contact person, e-mail and Website addresses along with membership requirements and fee information. Director of Campus Information Centers Jeff Brake said Maize Pages provides prospec- tive members of groups with the most accurate information, adding that in the past students could get contact lists but that information would change within a matter of weeks. Brake said Maize Pages is also advanta- geous because it can include groups that join throughout the year. "The online version can be updated as soon as an organization registers Brake said. Brake said currently the system lists more than 1t000 organizations. LSA first-year student Joe Wagner said he will definitely use the site this fall when decid- ing if he'd like to join particular groups. "I'll use it as a back-up to learn more about the organizations," Wagner said. Wagner added that an online resource is more convenient than lists of organizations because there are category selections to target specific interests. "You can go and find exact- ly what you want," he said. Just as the website is making the search for a particular campus group easier, student group leaders whose task it is to register their organi- zation are also able to take advantage of the University's online resources. For the second year in a row, student leaders can begin the reg- istration process at the MSA Website. MSA Administrative Coordinator Angela Armstrong said the online registration has made the task much easier for both student groups and the MSA office. "It ends the paper trail," Armstrong said. Registration will begin Sept. I and will remain valid for one year. Annstrong said registration is important so that groups can retain their privileges to reserve rooms in the Michtigan Union. particilate in Festifall and apply for funding from MSA. After group leaders complete the signature page on-line it must be submitted to MSA for approval. The page must then be turned into tite Student Organization Accounts Sers ice ase then register with the SOAS office. Armstrong recommends groups re-register in early September because SOAS accounts will freeze after Sept. 30. University Students Against Cancer President Julie Blaszak said she will re-register USAC online this fall. "All students at the University have busy lives, especially those in student groups"said Blaszak, an LSA junior. "Anything that will make the registering process easier is a bene- fit."
