Not only will "The Sixth Sense" thrill you, but it will break your heart. It proves that filmmakers don't have to take the edge off of a film to give ita dose of sen- timent. Instead Shyamalan blends these elements into a packagethat doesn't reek of Hollywood. Eclectic mix gets warped By Jonah Victor Daily Arts Writer An action-packed carnival of punk, swing, hip-hop, rap and ska descended on downtown Pontiac as over ,a 30 bands per- rped formed in the Tour 1999 1999 Warped Phoenix Plaza Tour. With six July 25,999 stages there was hardly a moment to rest during the eight hour festi- val. Some of the best skateboard- ers in the nation showed their skills while fans had the opportunity to mingle with band members in the bazaar of mer- chandise booths. It was Detroit's Atomic Fireballs who really got things heated up. Their swinging jump-blues rivaled any other band that day for its punk energy. "The crowd here today is great, there's something about Detroit," said the singer of the Bouncing Souls, who kept the party going with their pop-punk. He was excited to see his favorite Detroit band, the Bumpin' Uglies, on the local stage. "This is fun, the Warped Tour, yeah. Why not?" Rapper Ice-T changed up the pace. While he delighted some, he appar- ently annoyed many others. Less Than Jake brought the show to a climax with their intense ska- metal-punk. A costumed crew began spraying silly-string, shooting water guns and launching water balloons at thousands of dancing and moshing fans. The fire-breathing Mr. Skull brought the adrenaline rush to a close with a blast of flames. The pioneers of '90s swing, Royal Crown Revue, cooled things down with their jazzy "gangster bop." Despite the intense heat and wearing their trademark leisure suits, the entire band sounded excellent as they played some of their best mate- rial. "The Warped Tour is a sort of rolling party," said guitarist James. "It's a bunch of young people look- ing for something to be a part of, but don't know what it is."
