Monday, July 26, 1999 - The Michigan Daily - 7 LETTER Sntinued from Page 1 said SOLE organizer and LSA senior Andy Cornell. In March, 30 members of SOLE stormed Bollinger's office, occupying it for 51 hours. The advisory committee, to start bi-weekly meet- ings in September, is made up of 10 student, faculty and staff representatives. Although earlier reports incorrectly reported that the University has affiliated with the Fair Labor sociation - a government sponsored coalition of rporations, human rights groups and other organi- zations aimed at monitoring and curbing sweatshop conditions in the apparel industry - Public Policy Prof. John Chamberlain, the advisory committee chair, said no such partnership has been committed to as of yet. "However, the committee will consider all options for affiliation,".he said. The University remains one of the only large schools in the nation to not ally itself with the FLA. Since January, student protests at college campus- es across the nation have brought the issue of sweat- shop labor in the collegiate apparel industry to the forefront - highlighting flaws in the FLAs code of conduct. SOLE and its affiliate groups on campuses nationwide are calling for universities to reject the FLA, calling it a cover for sweatshops. Last Tuesday, representatives from United Students Against Sweatshop went to the White House to met with Gene Sperling, President Bill "The (Fair Labor Association) is nothing but a smokescreen for hiding unjust labor practices." - Lyndsey Norman University of Arkansas student Clinton's assistant for economic policy, to discuss the FLA and the anti-sweatshop movement. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill stu- dent Marion Traub-Werner, one of the USAS repre- sentatives at the meeting, said Sperling was unwill- ing to meet the student's demands. "Without full public disclosure we cannot know whether a monitoring system actually improves working conditions," Traub-Werner said. "The FLA is nothing but a smoke screen for hid- ing unjust labor practices," said University of Arkansas student Lyndsey Norman, a USAS orga- nizer. "Our message to the (Clinton) administration is 'mend it or end it."' With the increased pressure on the FLA, the University will in the neantime wait and see. "The University continues to consult with other universities and a wide range of government agen- cies and non-governmental organizations on all aspect of this issue," Chamberlain said. $1500 circulari $800 ovt. cessa $800 Govt.
