"Run Lola Run," as itsname suggests,
is all about energy. Pulsing. techno-
backed energy as envisioned by German
impresario Tom Tkwer pushes "Lola"
to the limits and bevond, creating some-
thing more than ju an il-conceived the-
oretical exercise a la "Sliding Doors" or
"Lock, Stock and sJo Smoking
Barrels." Indeed "Lola" could be
described a an cxbI aating otsbiiation
of the aimr twv ftm, but S :O far sur-
passes thesm in both 'Isle and substance
that to do so sould be an insult.

Potente's expressive face. Her
boyfriend, Manni, owes 100,000
marks to his crime boss -- money he
doesn't have - in the next 20 min-
utes. No money, bye-bye Manni. So
Lola runs and runs and runs some
more all over town attempting to
track down this extraordinary sum of
money. Unfortunately, she fails. As
the film's epigraph succinctly
implies, ho-ev-r, this life is a game
that rosets to ero if you want it to,
and Lola wats it Ii.

And us? We're her willing follow-
ers, her fan base, the ones who root
for her to get it right this time and
save both herself and Manni from
certain anguish, if not death. Tykwer
manages to rescue Manni, Lola and
his audience - with plenty of time
to spare.
